DV9410US keeps restarting but no display, motherboard?

I have a DV9410US that just keeps restarting with no display I have tried booting from a bootable CD and same problem. I have tried clearing the CMOS as per the procedure in this doc. C1311536 no change I have put an external display on it and used the Fn and F4 keys and no display. Is it the motherboard?

Re: DV9410US keeps restarting but no display, motherboard?

Sorry to say, but it sounds like the Nvidia GPU failure so common in the dv6000/dv9000 series.:(

Several members over in the Consumer Forum have used the RebootIt service with good results. The guy at Ebay has many good ratings on his service and is quick to respond to emails. I (luckily) haven't had to use the service but have corresponded with him just because of all the failures I have seen here and other online forums.

Re: DV9410US keeps restarting but no display, motherboard?

So far we haven't done anything. The plan is to get a USB to SATA 2.5 inch case and pull the HD and put into the case so that we can get the data off of the HD. We replaced the battery so it is looking like we would be close to half of the price of a new machine. So we are waiting for the Disk case.

Re: DV9410US keeps restarting but no display, motherboard?

I finally got the HD SATA to USB case and ran a virus scan on the HD from the DV9410US that died on a DV9610US and it didn't find anything so we made sure that we could access the files on the vista machine. I then moved it over to an XP machine and it can access the needed files OK. We couldn't transfer the IE8 favorites so we moved them by hand I haven't checked the other stuff. I am thinking of sending it to the one fellow in the near future. There are questions if it is worth it we got 3 years out of it.

Re: DV9410US keeps restarting but no display, motherboard?

Glad to hear that you were able to rescue your files. As for repairing it, I guess you just have to weigh the options of repair versus a new laptop. Of course,at $69 and the added copper shims for extra cooling that laptop could last another 3-5 yrs...

Re: DV9410US keeps restarting but no display, motherboard?

Is it possible to buy ther chipset or is it a ballgrid array that is soldered to the Motherboard. Are the shims availlable?

This process actually can be done at home. It is done by using a heatgun to heat the GPU to 220 degrees to melt and reflow the solder which holds the gpu in place. Video HERE The copper shims can be cut to fit or I am told are available precut on Ebay for a few $.

It looks like the best thing to do is to wait for the Dec20 date and see what happens.

Re: DV9410US keeps restarting but no display, motherboard?

The real kicker is that we used a fan base from day one on this machine. It looks like it just pushed over the HP extended warrenty. Have you posted this info on the other post about Nvida problems?

I am really disappointed in the limited models listed under this. Seems to only include the ones that HP had under the Extended Warranty, with TX1000 and F500 added.

No they aren't. And unfortunately a lot of other models with Nvidia gpu issue aren't either.

Re: DV9410US keeps restarting but no display, motherboard?

It is not nearly as common, mainly I think because desktops run much cooler than laptops. I have seen a report or two on desktop Nvidia failure at the Consumer Forum.
