USB hub cascading

[ Edited ]

Can you add another USB hub to one port of an existing hub and expect the posrts of this new hub function properly despite how slow the whole contraption becomes ?

I have quite few external hard drives and I am out of USB ports on my hub. My poor old laptop has a single usable external USB port and I do not want to invest in a new PCMCIA based USB host adapter. I do not care about how fast or slow the access to the external disks get. I just want to be able to read filess off of the external disks and acassionally store a few bytes worth.

Is this do-able or am I getting into the uncharted territory ?

Re: USB hub cascading

Hi Mel,

I'd suggest that you orient your search to an externally powered USB hub. You won't get quicker exchanges if your single port is not USB 2.2 but, at least, you'll avoid possible lack of amperage.

Re: USB hub cascading

USB is designed to make use of this technique

So as mentioned in the previous post if powered hubs are used it must work.

Re: USB hub cascading

Hi there.
My experience is, that most devices work on cascaded USB hubs, but some do not.
The hub should have it's own power source.
At home i have to test these things first.
I have one USB cable ( 2.0 ) open for such tests or devices.
