Re: how to remove power on password on hp d530u

As far as we are concerned here at this Forum it cannot be done, for obvious reasons. We have no way to know if somebody has his hands on a stolen laptop trying to use us to crack it. Call HP and if you can prove ownership they will give a workaround. Having said all that it really is a very secure system and I have not seen any foolproof methods of removing the POP on a newer model laptop short of removing the CMOS chip and soldering a new one in place.

Re: how to remove power on password on hp d530u

This is not a laptop? Horse of a different color. Just remove the CMOS or coin sized battery on the motherboard and count to 30 with the power cord pulled and not power to the machine. Voila! you are back to factory defaults with no password set. This illustrates the significant difference between laptop and desktop computers as far as security.

Re: how to remove power on password on hp d530u

Steve,

Actually you have to remove a jumper and power on the desktop. Shut the desktop down, replace the jumper and the password has been reset.

Like you said, however, the difference in security between a desktop and notebook is miles apart.

Re: how to remove power on password on hp d530u

Hello Andrzej,

Which model notebook do you have? In order to answer we need a little information about the machine.

Vince

P.S. It is normally requested that people open their own thread.

Re: how to remove power on password on hp d530u

Hello Andrejz,

According to the maintenance and service manual ( http://bizsupport2.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01293339/c01293339.pdf ) this is the procedure to remove the password for your model notebook:

Unknown user password
If the computer you are servicing has an unknown user password, follow these steps to clear the password:
NOTE: These steps also clear CMOS.
1. Shut down the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the
computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
2. Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer.
3. Disconnect the power from the computer by first unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet and
then unplugging the AC adapter from the computer.
4. Remove the battery (see Battery on page 39).
5. Remove the real-time clock (RTC) battery (see RTC battery on page 77).
6. Wait approximately 15 minutes.
7. Replace the RTC battery and reassemble the computer.
8. Connect AC power to the computer. Do not reinsert any batteries at this time.
9. Turn on the computer.
All passwords and all CMOS settings have been cleared.

Re: how to remove power on password on hp d530u

Hello Andrzej,

Are you sure it is the power-on-password and not a hard drive password? If it is a hard drive password then you will have to replace the hard drive.

The procedure listed above is taken directly out of the maintenance and service guide.

You might also want to contact a HP service rep and ask for a price quote.

Re: how to remove power on password on hp d530u

Andrzej,

I just remembered an old thread where someone had asked about the POP for a Compaq EVO. Here is the response.

Miguel Rivas May 18, 2009 20:53:16 GMT Unassigned

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I did it the first time and it did not clear the password. Afterwords, I tried it again and instead of hitting F1 to save the changes, I entered the System Setup (BIOS) by hitting F10. This allowed me to change the start up and power-on passwords by entering them as blank. *Note: You will be given the options after the memory test is complete.

Maybe this will help you, too.
