TC4200 Reinstall

I was gifted a TC4200. So far I have found it to be missing an OS, which I now have a copy of. But I do not see a CD, how am I supposed to install the OS with no CD player? Can I copy the CDs to a Flash drive or do I need to purchase an external drive to do this? Also will the computer recognize the USB Flash drive or the external CD ROM drive?

Re: TC4200 Reinstall

It will be very hard to copy the recovery disks to a flash drive but it is theoretically possible. It will be much easier and your tablet will be greatly enhanced if you get an external DVD burner. I have loaded lots of tc4200s and tc4400s and the BIOS readily recognize and boot from a usb 2 external drive even the big 3.5" ones you can buy at just about any office store and for cheap if you watch the sales. The usb port on the right is a special one designed to work with the proprietary HP external drive bay and has an extra pin for power, but as I said any external usb 2 drive will work.

Re: TC4200 Reinstall

I appreciate that tip! And will do it that way instead. I've got a player laying around here some place Just have to remember! LOL Anyhow am i to assume the OS is on the optical disk and the rest of the HP goodies are on the CD's?

Re: TC4200 Reinstall

Please give me the titles of your disks. They should have HP logo and there is one usually a DVD for recovery of the TC4200 but some recovery sets have 2 or 3 CDs. One says "OS recovery" and the others say something like "application and driver recovery".

Re: TC4200 Reinstall

I have purchased direct from HP the following disks.
1)Operating system DVD (XP Tablet PC Edition 2005
2)Application & Recovery DVD
3)Application and driver recovery supplement CD

They all have the HP logo on them. Am I safe in assuming they are even in the correct order for installation Steve?

Re: TC4200 Reinstall

I contacted HP directly and got them for a grand total of $10/US. I chose not to have them ship them next day as they arrived on the 3rd day and i saved a few dollars there too.

Re: TC4200 Reinstall

Thank you so much for this information. I had a hard drive failure, I installed XP home but that won't drive the pen even with the drivers. I needed to know how to get the restore, and you guys answered.

I tried the ON LINE support - they are as useless as useless can be.. They kept telling me the unit is out of warranty and wouldn't be able to support it..

Glad to know there is some way to get help.

Re: TC4200 Reinstall

Could you please post the part number(s) you purchased from HP?  I have no problem buying discs from HP, I've done it prior for a couple of refurbs I bought that didn't come with media.
