Lost wireless connection

My 9-month old HP Elitepad with Windows 8.1 has twice lost its wireless connection after external intercessions - (1) after a Windows update and (2) after HP updated the system then Miscrosoft configured Windows features. Because I am new to tablets, I had to hire a professional on both occasions. The first fix required a wipe-out of everything on the tablet and start over. The second was easier, requiring re-installation of a driver. Can anyone eplain why this loss of wireless connection happens and advise how I can guard against another disappointment? Except for this problem, I am very happy with my tablet. Thanks for any help.
