HP Compaq NC9010 system error

Laptop booted up OK Windows XP and runs for 20-30mins before shutting down.
Subsequent bootups (when hot) returns message
"windows\system32\config\system file missing or corrupt".
Unable to restart until the computer is cold.
Tried to run windows repair , then did a re-install of windows xp. half way through the install , shutdown occurred with stop error
This I believe is a hardware error , not sure .Is this an overheating problem ,the fans seem to be working ok or some other hardware problem?
Any advice would be appreciated

Re: HP Compaq NC9010 system error

The usual thing to do is such a case is to test the hard drive (if you have not done so already). See if you are able to get into the BIOS/setup by pressing the F10 key when the HP logo comes up.
If you can go to the tools menu within setup, the HDD self test option can perform both the quick and comprehensive tests.
There is memory check that is available as well, but I usually find that a replacement check with known working memory modules is more conclusive.
This would also be a good time to check your warranty.
