Activating networking on an old HP500 Notebook

I'm trying to "revive" an old HP 500 notebook. I've installed an MS version WinXP SP2 OS and find no way to connect the unit to my wireless network. The wireles switch on the notebook is lighted, but no connection is established. A search in the task manager shows a mark on the network adapter with no driver installed. I tried to install a driver from my MS installation disc, but none was found.
What else can I do?
Is a installation of a HP WinXP required? If so, where can I get it?
Is there a suitable driver available? Where can I get it?
May it be the case that no network card hides behind the WiFi light? If so, is there a way to add a network card, maybe a usb network card, to the unit?
