Windows XP install on Evo N400c

I tried to install Windows XP Pro SP2 on my Compaq Evo N400c laptop but the installer did not recognize the hard drive. I used Hitachi Feature tool to determine it is a 30 GB hard drive from Hitachi. They say all necessary hard drive drivers are included in Windows XP. The drive currently has Linux installed on it. Any suggestions on how to get the proper drivers so Windows XP can install?

Hi Tim,

XP should be able to "see" the HDD. In this case the original HDD is IDE and may be Linux is running AHCI mode therefore the XP installation disc can not see the HDD.

My suggestion is: (a) Find a latest XP installation disc (such as XP-SP3) or (b) reinstall Linux, but make sure the bios is set for compatibility mode.

Regards,

It's seem like that HP EVO n400c BIOS incompatible your Hitachi 30GB.

Maybe your Hitachi 30GB need big boot spinning electric current.

Re: Windows XP install on Evo N400c

Hitachi HDD was OEM fit on most N400Cs, so I don't believe this is a compatibility issue.
Are you using the CD drives in the MEU (base expansion unit) or trying via and external USB connected drive. I'm not sure the latter will work anyway - I believe later BIOS versions enabled it.

Re: Windows XP install on Evo N400c

Thank you both for your replies. I did review the disk drive in more detail using Hitachi Feature Tools and it told me I have some bad sectors that could not be repaired. I assume the proper solution is to get a new hard drive and try the install again. Thanks for your suggestions.

Quang Do,
sorry to say so, but as such things happened repeatedly:
If you don't know anything on a model, can't you refrain from posting?
There ain't no use in posting wild assumptions.

Pls note: The n400c appeared in 2001 abd there were no AHCI controllers then.

Re: Windows XP install on Evo N400c

Tim,
no, there is no BIOS-HDD incompatibility.

If you have bad sectirs in the HDD, get a new one.
Anything up to 130GB would be fine.
