Skype is a little odd sometimes when it comes to Internal Mics.
A suggestion for you is to turn off the Microphone Auto-Adjust & adjust the volume levels yourself.
SKYPE-->Tools-->Options-->Sound Devices-->(untick) Let Skype adjust my sound device settings-->Save.

Hello Toiletrolls,
As I understand the microphone has NEVER worked for you? I would check to make sure nothing is plugged into the microphone port on the PC. Also I would see if it works in windows sound recorder (Start, Programs, Accesories). Next thing I would do is make sure its not disabled in the BIOS for some reason, F10 on startup (after you see HP logo, before Windows logo start hitting the F10 key on and off), System Configuration, Built-in Device Options, Microphone SHOULD be checked; also may not be a bad idea to restore BIOS defaults (File, Restore Defaults, Save & exit).
Next go to control panel, sound, recording tab (this may be different depending on which version of windows you have), & make sure its selected correctly. You may also have a IDT application that you can make these changs to, explore that
Good luck!
