xnmtrap event configuration/modify shows the event log message:
$E $# args: $*
How do I config the trapd.conf so that I display the bgp state values (6:3, in above msg) and a message such as "bgpPeerState Idle, or bgpPeerState Connected."
Thanks for your help.

You can either configure the Trap Manually, (highlight it then configure one for the unformatted Trap definition).
Or you can select Options->Load/Unload MIBs
and then Load Standard/rfc-1269-BGP, rfc-1657-BGP4-MIB, or you can connect to the Cisco Website and pull in the SNMP v2 MIBs and then load the BGP4-MIB.my.
Hope that helps.

telling you that NNM was unable to find a matching event in the trapd.conf file.
So you need to go an add an event for it and set it to not log, log to alarm, etc.
