SNMP Trap testing

Hi, customer has enabled trap logging from device to NNM9i server, its been 2 days I do not see any traps coming in. Is there any test that can be carried out to confirm that traps can be seen in NNM9i server once they are generated in the device. Can we generate simulation of traps from the devices?

Thanks and Regards,
D

Re: SNMP Trap testing

Hi, thanks for the command.

ovevent is not available in NNM9i.

What is the similar command in NNM9i?

user@host -> is this the username of admin NNM server and host is the NNM server name?

Thanks and Regards,
D

Re: SNMP Trap testing

Hi D,

If you want to simulate traps you can use nnmsnmpnotify.ovpl command

nnmsnmpnotify.ovpl -v2c -d -a SimulatedNodeName NNMiServerName .1.3.6.1.6.3.1.1.5.3.1.3.6.1.4.1.9

You can change this Trap OID to anything Check Incident Configuration for the trap ID you want to simulate

    Re: SNMP Trap testing

    Hi D,

If you want to know why your server is not receiving traps you may check SNMPtrapd service by "ovstatus -v"

You can start the trap service by:

    nnmtrapconfig.ovpl -start

Also you can use this command to see the current traps received by NNMi "nnmtrapdump.ovpl "

dumping the current Trap pipeline ( last incidents) and check if there is traps received from your servers

    nnmtrapdump.ovpl -short -t

    Re: SNMP Trap testing

nnmtrapconfig.ovpl -start .. i tried this command it gives some initialization error.

Did you face this kind of situation earlier. but in the ovstatus -v , i see that TrapService is shown as Running fine.

among 160 devices enabled for SNMP Traps, i am receiving only 3 devices .. automate traps. But when i try to generate manually for them.. i dont see any traps for them too ....

Any steps you can think of here .. can you please let me know .. it will be off great help

    Re: SNMP Trap testing

    Hi,

I did check the same, as customer has enabled around 160 devices, i saw only 2-3 device sending some syslog traps. The output from the server for few commands are as follows:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ovstatus -v | findstr Trap
    NnmTrapService Service is started

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>nnmtrapdump.ovpl -short -t
    Trap SyslogMessage (.1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.41.2.0.1) at February 15, 2011 8:05:26 AM G
    ST from 172.25.0.122

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>nnmtrapconfig.ovpl -showProp
    trapInterface : All interfaces
    trapPort : 162
    recvSocketBufSize : 2048 KBytes
    blockTraps : true
    thresholdRate : 50 traps/sec
    rearmRate : 50 traps/sec
    overallThresholdRate : 150 traps/sec
    overallRearmRate : 150 traps/sec
    windowSize : 300 secs
    updateSourcesPeriod : 30 secs
    notifySourcesPeriod : 300 secs
    minTrapCount : 100 traps
    numSources : 10
    databaseQSize : 300000 traps
    pipelineQSize : 50000 traps
    databaseFileSize : 100 MBytes
    databaseFileCount : 5
    loopbackAddrOverride : Empty
    discoHintCacheSize : 5000
    discoHintCacheTimeout : 3600 secs

I did restart the trap service and tried issuing the nnmsnmpnotify.ovpl .. but no traps i see as of now in the NNM webpage.
