Node Status Unknown

Hi,

 

NNM shows some of the nodes status are unknown,  It is management address are also not reachable.. but it has not registered any alert for that? why no alerts are generated for the nodes which status are unknown ? or management addresses are Unavailable ?

 

do i have to enable or create any new incidents for the nodes status unknown. please provide your input on this scenario?

You need to refer to island node groups in the documentation.   Your devices ahve become isolated so the NNMi server has no way to determine thier status so they show up as unknown status.

For your concern the unknow status will note generate any event. if the nodes are very important you can add these nodes in to the important nodes nodegroup. You should read the following document so you can clearly understand why some  nodes will considere uknown status.

Hi

We have had exactly the same problem which has caused us lots of grief. missed cutomer devices going down as no alert when device goes unknown. We were offered the island Node group solution which works to a point. If you always want to get an alert when any device goes unknown you have to put them in the important Node group. We have over 25K devices and HP were concerned that it may cause problems putting them all in.

 

The filter on the important Node group was  sysOidNode like .1.3.6.1.* this was added under the additionla filter tab.

 

You can change the sysoidNode so it only picks up Cisco or whatever but we wanted everything, it didnt seem to cause a processing hit and no more "Unknown devices"

To be honest though, if you always want an alert for every single device that is unreachable, NNMi is not really the right product. There's lots of much cheaper, much simpler network monitoring tools out there that don't attempt to do any correlation, and will alarm for all devices that are offline.

For most cases, that actually works pretty well. Some people get concerned about event storms, but they're not a major problem for most networks. (Obviously they are a concern for very large networks).
