NNM 7.53 and use of "filters" file

Hello,

I am very new to NNM and I am slotted to take the HP NNM administration class in May.  Our previous administrator retired and we have a "filters" file that is less than informational on why certain choices were made.  Does anyone have any good examples of their setup(don't discover printers, dont' discover certain domain,  don't discover names="pc*",  don't discover certain OIDs, etc.)?  Or can you point me to a good best practices document on the filters file?  Thank you in advance.

Steve

I ran ovfiltercheck and got this too:

Defined Filter List
===================
ATMnodes
Bridges
CDPnodes
DS1nodes
DS3nodes
DiscoverAll
FrameRelayNodes
IPRouters
NetBackbone
NetInfrastructure
NetsNSegs
Networks
RMON1nodes
RMON2nodes
RMONnodes
Routers
SONETnodes
Segments
UnixNodes
WinOSNodes

Defined Set List
================
No sets defined

Re: NNM 7.53 and use of "filters" file

Hi,

One of the best documents is "NNM Guide to Scalability and Distribution"  page 37

    Answer to this question

Does anyone have any good examples of their setup(don't discover printers, dont' discover certain domain,  don't discover names="pc*",  don't discover certain OIDs, etc.)?

In NNM by default the discovery is not limited to certain devices, if you want to limit it to certain group of devices you have to create your custom filter with all you inclusions and exclusions and use this filter as discovery filter by the below steps:

    Options menu

    Network Polling Configuration

    General tab

    Use Discovery Filter

    Select your filter

Thank you, Mahmoud.  I will check out the information you have given me.  I should include our current "filters" file at some point in this discussion.  It is messy and I need to clean it up.

Another good source of information is :-

HP OpenView System Administration Handbook, by Zitello, Williams & Weber.

You should be able to get it cheap from Amazon....

    Hi Steve,

I do not see much customization in the list, i think the below filters are the only.

    UnixNodes
    WinOSNodes

If gone through the documents and want further information needed post here or to my website, you will be always welcomed.
