HP NNMi Configuration in HA Cluster - Error

Hello Expert,

We have HP NNMi 9.20 with latest patch 4 on windows cluster environment with embedded database.

We are facing issues in the HA configuration.

When we run command nnmhaconfigure.ovpl NNM

Please check below error that we are facing.

Please find the below error found while running the HA Configure script -

Re: HP NNMi Configuration in HA Cluster - Error

Hi Chentan

The error message you get from nnmhaconfigure.ovpl indicates that the virtual ip-address you want to use is already assigned to a server object.

The nnmhaconfigure.ovpl script expect to find a windows cluster instance up and running, but without any resources already configured for NNMi  which incluses: NNMi shared disk, virtual address (includeing server object).

The nnmhaconfigure.ovpl script gathers that information from your input and then issues the cluster.exe commands to create the NNMi RG, including the creation of the virtual addres (server object), disk (ha-mount) and the start/stop/monitoring facility. It has to be noted that the Administator as which you run the nnmhaconfigure.ovpl script must have the 'power' to register the server object for the virtual address with the AD server.

Kind regards

Dieter

Re: HP NNMi Configuration in HA Cluster - Error

Hi Dieter, Thanks for the reply. Taking your suggestions into consideration, we spoke to the Windows Server Admin and as per him, the cluster cannot be configured without using virtual ip resource. He is fine with shared disk resource but not with virtual ip. Please clarify us further on this, also if you have steps to do so please share us the same. Request you to provide your email id for better communication for this issue. Regards....

Re: HP NNMi Configuration in HA Cluster - Error

Hi Chetan

The cluster admin should only start the cluster services on both nodes, make then join the same cluster and configure the quorum disk. No resource is required. If the admin absolutely wants a virtual address to be configured somewhere, then use a different address thant the NNMi virtual address.

As told above, the nnmhaconfigure.ovpl script will take your input from the questions and then create all the necessary resources to form the NNMi resource group by running the appropriate cluster.exe commands. This includes the registration of a new computer object pointing to the virtual address.

If in doubt, then please open an HP support case for assistance. I will be out of the office for the xmas break, but there are support engineers available during the holidays.

Kind regards

Dieter

Re: HP NNMi Configuration in HA Cluster - Error

Hi Dieter,

Good Day :-)

We have configured NNMi in HA but still the HP docs are not clear about configuring the HA and hope the details would be included in the docs.

Now since we have configured NNMi in HA, we have query regarding the NIC Cards requirement for NNMi.

As per the doc, it says for HA... NNMi requires two NIC cards, so we asked for 2 nic cards on each NNMi server in cluster.

But after HA configuration, only one nic card has been utilised by nnmihaconfigure script ....Please let us know whether we can remove the second nic or is it required.....

Below is the output from ipconfigure command from the active NNMi server-

Ethernet adapter PRIMARY:                          ---- 1st NIC Card

   Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :
   Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::ed84:d211:2fff:aa2b%17
   IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 10.9.82.152     -----Physical IP
   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
   IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 10.9.82.91      -----HA RG (Virtual)
   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
   IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 10.9.82.110     -----Cluster(Virtual)
   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
   Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.9.82.1

Ethernet adapter SECONDARY:                          ---- 2nd NIC Card

   Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :
   Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::496e:7088:6232:b62c%16
   IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 10.9.11.31
   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

Re: HP NNMi Configuration in HA Cluster - Error

Hi Chetan

The requirement for a second laninterface card is not tight to NNMi itself, but to the nature of a HA cluster providing HA protection (HW redundancy). If one of the lan card fails, then the cluster manager can assign the NNMi virtual address to the remaining card and therefore, no failover will occur. If there is only 1 lan interface card available, then a failure of the NIC will always cause a failover.

In a typical HA setup, each physical cluster member would have a minimum of these HW components redundant to avoid a 'single point of failure':

- power supply

- lan cards (each lan card is connected to a dedicated switch)

- disks (local and shared)

If  one of these components fails, then the cluster member can still continue to run the resource groups.

If you have NNMi installed on virtual machines, then the HW redundancy aspect is shifted to the VM infrastructure. In that case you could opt to remove the second lan interface in the VM configuration.

Kind regards

Dieter
