HP Officejet Pro L7500 scan problem

We are having problems scanning/copying from our Officejet Pro L7500. We have had this printer for over a year and this problem just suddenly popped up.

The first sign of trouble was that our scanning dialog box would not come up at all - we got a message saying scanner not found. I uninstalled the software and reinstalled. I can scan now, but everything turns out black.

If I open the top and look at the scanner glass, I can see that the light bulb is on when the scanner bar is far to the right, before it begins to extend under the glass. Once the bar begins to extend to the glass the bulb goes out, so all scans are black.

We operate on Macintosh Systems 10.4.11 and higher. Any advice you can give would be much appreciated!
