I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Premium printer. First time I want to use a USB key to scan a document into the flash drive. When I put the flash drive into the USB port, the flash drive light does not come up and the printer keep saying to insert a flash drive. The light on the printer (on top of the USB port) does not light up either.
The printer does not recognize the USB key when I insert it.
The USB flash drive works fine on computers. I tried a second flash drive, same result.
Both drives are FAT32 formatted. Just to be sure, I reformatted one of them clean. Same result.
The user manual for this model says that it has been fully tested with a handful of USB flash drives but I see no reason that my drive won't event light up when I plug it in.
I am wondering if the USB port is faulty.

Does this printer have an option to print from the USB? If it sees something, then the port works.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out.
There are two USB ports on the printer.
One at the back of the printer. This one is used to connect the printer to the computer in order to be able to print. I do not use it. I choose the Ethernet port. I can print fine with Ethernet.
The second USB port is at the front. This one is used mainly for two purposes.
A) To be able to print the images that are on a USB flash drive
B) To be able to scan a document and save the PDF or JPG into the flash drive.
My problem is with the second port. The one at the front.
From your reply I suspect you think I meant the one at the back used to connect to the computer.
I am not trying to print. I am trying to scan a document and save it into the USB flash drive. But the printer won't even acknowledge that I inserted any of my USB flash drive into the front USB port. I insert it fully just like I do when I insert it into my computers. I tried my USB flash drives on 3 different computers. They work fine. So I think we can rule out that the flash drives might be faulty.
Maybe the flash drive must not be formatted FAT32? This is the most common format, so I do not think so.

No, I meant to test:

Hi Dennis, Thanks again for taking the time to help me out.
I tried printing images that are on a flash drive and it is a no go.
Here is what I did:
1) Tap the touch screen to lit it up (the printer was already on power)
2) Tap the arrow to go to page 2 of the menu
3) Tap the Photo icon
4) Tap the "Display and print" icon.
5) The printer asks me to insert a memory card or a USB storage device
6) I insert one of my USB flash drive on the front port.
7) I wait 120 seconds (the time to write all this)
8) The screen still says to insert a USB drive (it did not change) and the USB flash drive light is off and the USB port light is off too.
9) I removed the USB flash drive from the USB port and inserted a SD card in the memory card port (next to the USB port)
10) 5 seconds later, it told me it found 170 images and allows me to print them.
Am I doing this right?

It sure looks like it. So either the port is broken or disabled. Or something wrong with your flash drive format?
Can you talk to the EWS to see if there is some way to enable/disable the USB?

There is nothing wrong with my USB format as far as I can tell. When I saw it was not working, I reformatted it using the quick option. It did not work. So I reformatted it again without quick (took 2 hours). Same thing happen, the printer still does not recognize my USB flash drive. The USB flash drive was formatted in FAT32 before I reformatted it and I used that same option when I formatted it.
What is EWS?

>What is EWS?
Embedded Web Server.
You can access the printer using your browser and have access to advanced config options and displays.

I found the EWS and navigated through all the settings. The only one that could have contained a setting to disable it woudl have been in the Administration Settings where there are various checkboxes to enable/disable stuff.
Nothing about USB.
I did not find anything else that would allow me to enable the USB port.
I guess I will bring this printer where I bought it?

I guess you have already read this info about supported USB and memory cards:
And it flashes green then turns solid.

It sounds like you'll need to do this.
