A scanner error generally means a defect or failure with scanner subassembly & replacing the scanner will resolve the issue. If you are a end user, I would suggest you to contact HP support for further troubleshooting & repairs.

For M1005 MFP Scanner error 12’s a new firmware (20120831 or newer version) is now available to resolve the issue.

This is manufacturing fault in the printer and while contact @ CC of HP and service center they do some upgrade to printer. Again it stopped working. HP policy is very poor, even the printer still under warranty as per their record but they blame to produce bill and left to run to and from.
Stop this non-sense and awkward service and behavior and making fool to customers and resolve your manufacturing defects.

In order to resolve this issue, please follow the steps showing in this video:
After performaning it your scanner will start working but it might give half page with large scanning.
So to fix that follow below steps:
-Power on printer,
-Click on Ok button on printer control panel.
-Press and hold the left arrow key and OK button on printer.
-Release both keys at same time.
-choose the option "Scan top" service.
-Restart the printer.
It should be working now.
