HP 3390: 'document feeder mispic. reload' error when faxing

When we try to fax using paper in the paper feeder it will begin to pull in the paper during the 'storing fax' stage but only pull in about an inch.

Then on the display the following message is shown:

document feeder mispic. reload

The fax activity log doesn't show anything specific (just a type 'monitor dial' and result 'stop') and the web interface provides no clue.

I also haven't been able to get a hit on this error message either so any help would be much appreciated.
