Color LaserJet 2840 page too complex error

[ Edited ]

I am having a tough time getting my 2840 to work with windows 7, and when I do it gives me a "page too complex" error. Any help would be appreaciated.

Re: Color LaserJet 2840 page too complex error

My 2840 was working fine with Windows 7 but just started giving me the page too complex error on even simple documents.  Haven't seen any posts here but will put it up if I can solve the problem

Re: Color LaserJet 2840 page too complex error

I just went through this fix yesterday. I can't remember where I found it on hp.com, though. Here it is:

  1. Turn printer on.
  2. On your printer, press the Menu button
  3. Press 2 (on the fax dial pad)
  4. Press the right arrow (next to Enter button) until you arrive at "High Speed USB.
  5. Press Enter
  6. Press right arrow to select "Off."
  7. Press Enter.
  8. Press Enter again.

Printer will then reboot. I used to get this error occasionally with Windows XP. I wish I would have taken the time to fix this a long time ago!

Re: Color LaserJet 2840 page too complex error

Strangely enough this solution also works when you print via IP.

The PC with Win7 has to be connected by USB when you want to use the scanner function.

It would be nice if HP where able to make a driver witch really works with Win 7, the old drivers always worked just fine (Linux, win 2000, win XP) the first trouble started with Vista but this is really bizarre.

Re: Color LaserJet 2840 page too complex error

This did not help me.  The real solution was to clear the memory of the printer and delete all stored faxes.  These can clog up the memory.  So if the USB fix doesn't work, try clearing faxes.

Worked like a charm!  I have been trying to figure this out for years and finally your posting saved my ass!  Thanks for posting.   Now if only I can figure out why I have ink spots on the edges of my printouts.....

Re: Color LaserJet 2840 page too complex error

Are you kidding me?  This solution has been on here since 2010!  What a fool I am.  I almost threw the printer away I was so frustrated!  My brother-in-law reinstalled, the IT guy at work was baffled, Staples couldn't fix it, and so on and so on.  I found this fix on line and I am so proud of myself - I did it and it finally works.  This printer was just too expensive to throw away.  I'm glad I stayed with it.  I knew it had to be something uncomplicated but if I ever see "Page too complex" again I think I'll have to walk away and take a breath!

Re: Color LaserJet 2840 page too complex error

This did NOT solve my problem.

The printer shows up an unknown USB device.

It's 2013, and I can't believe I have to waste time with nonsense like getting a printer and a laptop from the same manufacturer  with Windows 7 64-bit to work together

Re: Color LaserJet 2840 page too complex error

You are attaching a 8 year old printer to a new computer. Put the usb port on the printer back the way it was and then try another usb port on the computer. If that does not work, then try another usb cable. If still no joy, then maybe you have an issue with the formatter on the printer.

Re: Color LaserJet 2840 page too complex error

I use a Mac.  Thanks for the info on turning off the USB.  I went to the menu structure on the printer and turned off the

USB and it printed fine without a (page to complex error)  For the heck of it I turned it back on and disconnected the USB

cable and just printed through the network..    It worked fine.  So I am assuming there was a conflict with the router, network and the USB hookup...Thankssssss

If it's showing up as an "unknown USB device" then it's not actually installed correctly. Windows 7 does have proprietary drivers that will power the printing functions of this printer (install the HP 2800 series drivers), but as long as it is connected to your router via ethernet cable, it should find it fine.

If it doesn't, do a full printer reset to restore factory settings to it - you might need to assign it a static / manual IP address to keep the printing destination constant.

If you're still seeing as an unknown USB device - this fix won't help you at all - you need to install it first, and then if it's still giving you the page complex error - follow the instructions at the top of the thread.

Re: Color LaserJet 2840 page too complex error

Hello,

I'm picking up on this problem after setting it aside for a while.

Let's not jump to pat answers and easy conclusions, but rather attempt to perform real diagnostics.

Here's my setup:
I have an HP Elitebook 8460p in a docking base.  I don't know if the docking base has USB 2.0 or not.
The same syptoms occur whether I plug the printer USB into the doc or directly into the laptop.
The laptop USB port has a "SS" designation.
Laptop is running Windows 7, 64-bit.

My network is hardwired, and I have assigned a fixed IP address to the printer.

I need to be able to print and scan.

1) If I set USB Hi Speed to OFF, then I get Unrecognized USB device (can't scan), but I can print via IP no problem.

2) If I set USB Hi Speed to ON, then I can scan (all icons appear on the printer window), but can't print (get page too complex error)

BTW, I upgraded the printer firmware at the beginning of this process.

Can HP offer a solution to this problem, so I don't have to change settings when switching from scanning to printing?

Perhaps a potential solution would be to support scanning over IP with a decent scan application - or come up with a better resolution on the USB issue.

Thank you.
Your customer,
Bob
