I just purchased a 3027MFP, and the scanner attempts to initialize and will not. Then the LCD display shows ! beside all of the scanning functions, it tells me to make sure the scanner is unlocked (which it is) and reboot the machine. I have rebooted several times, maybe I have a DOA product? Any suggestions?

It appears to be DOA. Get it replaced or at least get direction from your vendor or contact HP tech support. You would not want to take a chance of voiding your warranty trying some of the things mentioned in the service manual although it is quite likely a loose connection.
30.1.34
Loss of communication with the formatter or
cable error.
1. Turn off the device and then turn on
the device.
2. Check the connections between the
scanner assembly and the formatter.
3. Make sure that the hard disk drive on
the formatter is connected correctly
and that the hard disk is functioning
correctly.
4. This error condition can be related to
network traffic at the customer site;
isolate the MFP from the network and
troubleshoot accordingly.
5. If the message persists, replace the
scanner assembly.
