HP S2331a LCD Monitor goes to sleep and will not wake up

The monitor displays a message, "Monitor going to sleep", and then turns itself off.  Nothing I do can make it turn back on. I cannot shut down the PC (A Pavilion P6000 Series Model No p6717me-m) so have to physically turn it off.  Invariably there is unsaved information that is lost.  It is driving me crazy.  I have checked and reset power saving options and screens saver options, but nothing makes a difference.

Hi Doha-Al,

It could be an issue with your graphics card or even the monitor. Take a look at this HP Support document on this error. The steps should help you figure out the problem:

Let us know how it goes.

Re: HP S2331a LCD Monitor goes to sleep and will not wake up

After a long interval here are my conclusions.  I tried all the suggestions in the link suggested by Mr_Do.  No success.  I then connected the monitor to an aging HP Notebook (Pavilion dv6500), and used it successfully for long periods, including intensive Google Earth viewing,  with no problems. So my conclusion is that it is not the problem of the monitor, but the PC.  The problem occurred most often when using Google Earth, so I had stopped using Google earth in the desktop.  However today I was using Word on the desktop, and copying images from a web site, and it ocurred again. Thanks to a five minute autosave setting in Word, I didn't lose too much effort, but it could easily have been worse if I had unsaved info in other open applications when it shut down.  I find it hard to understand why this issue is so hard to solve by HP!!

Re: HP S2331a LCD Monitor goes to sleep and will not wake up

After many years of cursing my PC, I stopped using it for Google earth.  However I recently had occasion to do some graphics intensive work, which caused it to crash again.  I restarted the PC and after a fairly short time it crashed again.  After repating this a few times, I reviewed the advice given by the HP man, Mr_Do,  to see if there was anything I had missed in the advice he had given me so long ago.  I noted his comment about the graphics card, and thought I would try replacing it.  I contacted my local computer store and found that a new card would cost me around $100, so I jumped at the chance, and took it in to them the next day. The technician opened the box, looked inside, and said, "Hey look at this. "  There is a cooling fan on the card, and it had not been working, as it was obstructed by a wire that had not been routed and secured properly.  He removed the graphics card, re-routed the wire, checked that the fan was going, put the lid back on and said "Try that."  He explained that the graphics card gets hot when working hard, and if it gets  too hot it just shuts down.  Well it seems to have done the trick, as the problem has not occurred since,  and I have enjoyed google earth and other graphics application without any problems.  The PC had not been opened since new, so it was a fault at the time of assembly.  Maybe this solution will proved a cheap fix for others who have encountered similar problems.
