rx 2660 installaion

I have a rx 2660 sever. I tried installing various 64bit os but none worked (none of the cds boot). Finnaly I found that i needed the itanium version and tried with centos 4.6 ia64 but this cd is also not booting. Please can you advise of any free os which is downloadable and support oracle 9i also.

Re: rx 2660 installaion

I cannot speak to support for/by Oracle 9I, but will point-out that the rx2660 is supported by RHEL5 and IIRC either SLES10 or SLES10SP1 or later. I've also installed "current" Debian bits on an rx2660 and had them work.

I believe that some version of RHEL 4.X is supported, but I don't recall the value of "X" other than I know it isn't 0.

When you say the CD is "not booting" can you be more specific - does it not boot _at all_ or does it seem to boot for a while and then the output stop?

Re: rx 2660 installaion

Thats right it tries to boot and then stops. Iam surprised why centos ia 64 is not working on this. (not booting). What are you remarks about free bsd 6.2? will it work in rx 2660? Also would it be better to go for suse 10 or suse 10 with sp1.

Re: rx 2660 installaion

Here is the list of supported OS:

http://h20341.www2.hp.com/integrity/cache/452201-0-0-0-121.html

The problem is, the OS must be compiled for Itanium (ia64), any other OS intended for x86 or x64 won't work.

Hope this helps!

Re: rx 2660 installaion

Stops how exactly? Do you see a loading vmunix and the initrd messages and then they stop? If so, then:

*) in the efi config make ceratin that the "pci" UART is the primary console

*) if you are installing a pre 2.6.10 kernel you should add a "console=ttyS0" to the command line of the kernel

*) if you are installing a post 2.6.10 kernel I think you are ok after the first step, at least for RHEL and SLES.

As for BSD, there have been revs of BSD which will boot and run on Integrity, but they are not "supported" by HP, only by the BSD community. You would need to check with them as to which rev of BSD can be used on an rx2660.

Re: rx 2660 installaion

That sounds like the problem with the kernel not knowing where to find the console. So, the aforementioned EFI config checks and perhaps trying some "console=ttySN" options added to the arguments passed to the kernel at startup, where N can be between 0 and 4 inclusive would be in order.

Re: rx 2660 installaion

will typing console=ttySN at the shell prompt solve my problem. Else can you give a step by step instruction on how to do this.

Re: rx 2660 installaion

Since you are now using SLES10SP1, that is a 2.6.10 or later kernel. It should be enough to make certain your firmware is up-to-date and then:

Newer EFI versions on low-end systems allow you to set a Primary and Secondary console device. Make sure you have one device selected as Primary. When you exit the EFI Console Configuration screen, hit ESC once, then wait. After a few seconds, a dialogue will appear asking to save the configuration to nvram. Select 'Y' and then you will be forced to reset the system.

Re: rx 2660 installaion

I agree, you should check the console config.

Go to EFI shell and perform this:

Shell> conconfig

CONSOLE CONFIGURATION

Index Primary Type Device Path
----- ------- ----- ----------
1 P Serial Acpi(HWP0002,PNP0A03,0)/Pci(1|2)
2 S VGA Acpi(HWP0002,PNP0A03,0)/Pci(3|0)

Maybe you want to have VGA as the primary console. You can change this with conconfig, see

Shell> help conconfig

Make sure you have only 1 active console, a secondary may cause problems.

Hope this helps!

Re: rx 2660 installaion

I have the same problem on a rx2660 server.
I make some tests and found, the problem appear only in /manual installation" mode of SLES10

1. SLES10 Advanced Installation
--> NOK; SLES10 Installation failed

2. new DVD Medium with Advanced Installation
--> NOK; SLES10 Installation failed

3. SLES10 Installation Standard
--> OK, but the partitioning of harddisk is wrong.
--> we can't change the partitions

4. SLES10 Advanced Installation with console=ttyS0 Parameter
--> NOK, Installation hang.
Uncompressing Linux... done
Loading file initrd...done

5. SLES10 Advanced Installation with EFI Shel comconfig = tty
--> NOK; SLES10 Installation failed

6. SLES10 Installation Safe Settings
--> OK, I can change the patitions.

Whats the problem with save settings ?
Can we use this installation on a production host ?

Re: rx 2660 installaion

I installed the server with suse 10 sp1 version which i donloaded free from novel site. You must connect a console cable (9pin female connector on both ends) to a desktop or laptop take the hyperterminal set baud rate to 9600 and comence installation. Everything else will be smooth.

The only problem I am facing is installing Oracle 9i R2 on this.

Does any one have a solution for this?

Re: rx 2660 installaion

I tried SLES10, RHEL5 and Debian 4 all of them are IA64 installation CD's, but no progress. Installation hangs in the beginning (on initrd).
I have no console cable, so I don't know what to do. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Re: rx 2660 installaion

If you have no console cable, what are you using for a console, and how do you have the console configured in EFI?
