MPE reinstallation

Hello,
we created a SLT (MPEiX6.0) and backuped the files (@.@.@;directory). We did a reinstall by booting with the new created system load tape and ISL>install. After the install process the machine did an autoboot automatically. The following messages came up:

ISL> start norecovery
MPE/iX launch facility
Initialize_genesis - Version : <<870204.1552>>
WED, MAY 4, 2005, 12:34:59 PM (y/n)?y
[CDM]11 1 4 10
Initialize genesis completed.
Create Console Messages kso completed.
Initialize memory manager completed.
Initialize resident kernel completed.
Initialize volume management and mount the System Disk
Initialize volume management completed.
Opening the native system library completed.

At this point the system gave no further messages or informations. And -of course- no MPE prompt was available, although we waited more than 60 minutes. By the way the hex-code on the console is: INIT CF40

We tried the same procedure on another HP3000 hardware with the same result.

Is there anybody who can help me?

Re: MPE reinstallation

Hi

probably your CSLT have a problem. Have you another CSLT older than this one? if not, you must reinstall with SLT and configure the system.

Re: MPE reinstallation

Thanks Jorge,
but the problem is not solved. I created several SLTs on different tapedrives (DDS2 and DDS3) always with the same result...

Re: MPE reinstallation

HI

Then the problem were in SL, XL, or NL or in all of them, and all the CSLT you have are inconsistent. I think the only way is install with SLT and reconfigure...

Re: MPE reinstallation

Hello Heino,

There is the option "message" in the ISL>START command which gives more details when system hangs during bootup process.

Do again the ISL>START as follows:

ISL>START NORECOVERY MESSAGE

Re: MPE reinstallation

Some questions which might help:
-On what HPe3000 model did you create SLT, using what kind of DDS drive (DDS, DDS2 or DDS3) and what kind of media (DDS, DDS2 or DDS3) ?
-On what HPe3000 system are you trying to install, using what kind of DDS drive (DDS, DDS2 or DDS3) ?
-Are you trying to INSTALL on internal/external disk ?
-Did you make sure all SCSI termination were ok ?

Re: MPE reinstallation

Thanks Jorge, Emile and Denis!

We followed your recommendations and startet the system
with ISL>START NORECOVERY MESSAGE. The result is:

"Initialize_genesis - Version : <<870204.1552>>

Make console kso swappable completed.
Opening the native system library completed."

It seems, there is only one interesting row:
"Exit mg_is_stage_enabled_raw_mode, NOT enabled."
Are you able to interpret these lines?

Denis: We created the CSLT on model 989KS-450. It is a
DDS3 magtape. We tried DDS2 and DDS3 media. Our target test-system
is a 939KS-020 with both magtape types installed. The system disk is
an external 4.3GB FWD-SCSI drive installed in a high available
enclosure (hass) with FWD-terminator. By the way: An original SLT
of the HP distribution works fine. There should not be a hardware
fault.

Re: MPE reinstallation

Hello Heino,

Sorry for the delay. There was an issue using CSLT created on an 989-450 to be used on an 959, 969 or 939.

You'll need to apply 6.0 patch MPELXB7 on the 989-450 prior to re-create the CSLT tape.

The patch is available for download in the ITRC patches home. MPELXB7 has been superseded by MPEMX90 so you may want to apply the most recent one.
