Software Universe Day 1 - Politics, Progress, and Pools (BSM 9 announcement)

The mainstage presentations that kickoff Software Universe are always exciting for me. This year I was involved in creating some of the content related to the BSM 9 launch, so I appreciate just how much work is involved in pulling together the ideas, script, and supporting graphics. And how large a team works behind the scenes to make it all appear so smooth.

This year, since the event was held in Washington, DC, we had Sam Donaldson, Veteran Washington Correspondent, ABC News host the event. His personality, combined with a unique mist of political humor made the opening engaging and funny. One ongoing theme was how IT spending, both on the consumer and business side, was driving the economic recovery.

He introduced Bill Veghte, Exec VP, Software & Solutions, who recently joined HP after leading Microsoft’s very successful launch of Windows 7. Bill shared his vision of where the software industry is headed and how HP will expand its leadership by focusing on innovation that will allow business to optimize IT and free their creative minds to develop new products and services. BSM 9 is part of this enabling technology that will help companies deliver better, faster applications without having to worry about the underlying IT infrastructure.

The inspirational part of the event was next. Dara Torres, winner of 12 Olympic Medals across five Olympic games. She won her most recent medals at the Summer Games in Bejing at age 41. After coming off a period of retirement and having a baby. She talked about her will to win and how she overcame many obstacles to even reach the Olympics. Many of her stories and humorous anecdotes centered around the perceptions people had about her just based on her age.

After such a great kickoff, the thousands of attendees streamed out of the ballroom to attend the first of hundreds of sessions spread over the next four days. My next blog posts will cover some of these sessions as well as peer-to-peer meetings facilitated by HP experts.

Most customers and partners I spoke to came to Software Universe to learn how they can harness the Power of HP to help their organizations become more competitive in an increasingly competitive global economy.
