SWU Day 1 - Business Service Management 9 (BSM9): transforming IT operations to drive innovation

To a standing room only crowd, Norm Follett officially released the details about BSM 9. He started with the key themes of the release and then discussed each of the key areas of enhancement. He started with some eye-popping statistics about the release, including the fact that HP filed over 30 patents related to this release and over 1000 engineer-years went into its development.

 

104i1D6F432D630618BCOver the past few years, one theme recurs during meetings with any customer that owns more than one product from HP Software - integration. This was validated at a recent executive meeting in which several customers spoke about how they would spend $100 dollars on development resources. They could choose to spread their investment on any combination of quality, integration, and new features. As you probably guessed, the investment mix was $50 on integration and $50 on quality. Nothing on new features.

 

Fortunately for us - and for you - they do not own our R&D budget. However, we did follow their advice and invest heavily in both integration and quality testing. BSM 9 very tightly integrates the core functionality of Operations Center, specifically the Operations Manager i event browser, with the application and end-user focus of Business Availability Center. This means that all events flow into a single operations bridge, including events from third-party vendors.

 

Service Level Agreement screenSince so much information is available through a single console, we also invested in a very rich feature set for customization. In five minutes, a skilled administrator can create a custom, role-based screen that includes as much information as the user needs to perform their job effectively. This could range from a dashboard for a business owner that includes dials on how their service is performing along with some boxes indicating the service levels over time. 

 

 

 

 105i86B0FABA7DC3F209A tier 1 person in the Operations Bridge might look at an event console with screens that change based on the context of what event is highlighted. Two smaller windows might contain the topology of a business service and indicators of its health. Watching for problems in the underlying infrastructure allows operators to see emerging issues and take corrective action before they have an impact on the user experience.

 

Another theme that Norm discussed was automation. (More features, but not at the expense of integration or quality!) Automation happens across the BSM 9 portfolio. Operations Manager i automates event correlation using the topology of the infrastructure. We introduced Topology-based Event Correlation (TBEC) in OMi version 8.0 in 2008. This version refines it further, including more out-of-the-box functionality for monitoring common applications. BSM 9 also relies on a Run-time Service Model to keep track of the relationships among business services, transactions, applications, middleware, and virtual and physical infrastructure. Based on our proven CMDB technology, the Run-time Service Model uses HP Operations Manager agents and Smart Plug-Ins (SPIs) to discover changes to the infrastructure as they happen. This allows TBEC to correlate two sets of dynamic information - the event streams and changing topology - and determine the causal event among a sea of red alerts. We will discuss the Run-time Service Model in more detail in future blog posts.

 

Integration and automation come together in the linkage between BSM 9 and Operations Orchestration. Our IT process automation or runbook automation solution fits neatly behind the scenes in Operations Manager i. When an operation finds the causal event, a mouse click brings up a set of actions or next steps. One option is to run an Operations Orchestration flow to automatically remediate the problem. Operations Orchestration captures expert knowledge into a series of process steps that it executes. Runbooks can include complex business logic that follow the steps an expert would take in solving a problem. Checking log files for specific items, restarting services and verifying the fix, and comparing key values to thresholds are just part of Operations Orchestration’s capabilities. It includes over 3000 work flow components that an administrator can use to diagnose, repair, and document common IT problems.

 

107i9CC4E12384B259F1One additional area of investment in BSM 9 was additional support for virtualization and cloud services. Of course, the latest version of our Virtualization Smart Plug In collects data from both VMware and Hyper-V and feeds it into the OMi event console. So, the virtualized infrastructure appears in service maps that are managed (and automatically updated) in the Run-time Service Model. BSM 9 adds the ability to map cloud services into this model. As more companies use private or public clouds to scale (cloudburst!) as demand increases, they need a way to monitor the service levels of infrastructure they do not control. BSM 9 provides a future-proof platform for companies that are considering moving some of their IT to the cloud.

 

As you can imagine, there was an extensive Q&A session at the end of the talk. In fact, the Operations Center team spend the majority of the week carrying out conversations about BSM 9 and OMi 9 with customers, partners, and fellow employees.
