Measure what matters. KPIs for IT Operations

IT Operations staff have measured what matters for decades. They have successfully used products such as HP Operations Center (and its predecessor HP OpenView Operations) to define metrics and track them to manage increasingly complex IT infrastructures. One challenge has been rolling up this data - connecting the information across disparate parts of the business so corporate and IT executives could manage holistically.

HP has offered performance tools for various IT functions such as the Operations Bridge, Service Desk, Application Development, Line of Business Owner, and Security team. Now we are offering a solution for systematically managing IT overall while providing a means to better demonstrate to the business IT’s effectiveness, efficiency, and value. Kind of like a grand unification model (thanks to my colleague Michael Procopio for this analogy) that ties together all the IT functions within an organization. If you follow ITIL methodology, this collects the information you need for managing individual functions as well as driving Continuous Service Improvement.

The new HP IT Performance Suite is a systematic approach to digitizing the sensing, measuring, and instrumentation of the entire IT-controlled landscape into a single consolidated view for IT leaders and practitioners. For example, all the metrics that Operations Center collects, such as availability, service levels, MTBF, MTTR, number and duration of outages, and number of escalations roll up into the IT Performance Suite.

While the IT Performance Suite includes products for strategy, governance, application life management, information management, and risk management, readers of this blog will be most interested in the IT Operations capabilities.

Here is a description from the IT Performance Suite solution brief, which you can download at the bottom of this page.

IT operations: business service management for monitoring from end-users, applications, and infrastructure to identify potential problems before they cause outages; business service automation of updates and compliance across all elements of each business service; and IT service management to provide service integrity by orchestrating the entire service lifecycle from planning to production

I encourage you to see a demo at HP Discover and visit the blog to read more information about this exciting new solution from HP Software.
