New Exchange 2010 functionality throws backup a curve ball – are you ready?

By Shari Cravens

With Exchange 2010, Microsoft delivers new features to simplify data availability and management. Which is great. But it’s important to understand how this new functionality impacts your backup and recovery application.

With Exchange 2010, Microsoft introduces the concept of the Database Availability Group (DAG), which is an evolution of the Exchange Server 2007 SCR and CCR concept. Each availability group can consist of up to 16 systems, which can host multiple active and/or passive database copies. Passive copies are kept consistent with the active copy and the database availability group heals itself automatically if data on a particular node gets corrupted. Microsoft also introduced another change by making Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) snapshots the only mechanism by which Exchange data can be protected. Backup applications must be able to navigate this new functionality in order to effectively backup and restore data.

HP worked closely with Microsoft to ensure that our Data Protector customers could protect their Exchange 2010 environments today. Data Protector has the ability to back up and restore the passive or the active database using the VSS snapshot mechanism. In fact, using the Data Protector Zero Downtime Backup & Instant Recovery agents, administrators can:

  • Back up Exchange 2010 data as often and whenever you like

  • Recover entire databases or single items

  • Recover to any point in time

And it’s available now. No waiting. Watch the demo on HP’s Information Management Digital Hub.
