New HP Data Center Transformation Solution is now available!

HP Software and Services are proud to announce the availability of a new integrated Data Center Transformation (DCT) solution.  HP Software developed a new automated discovery approach for data center managers to discover physical assets like software and their associated dependencies like servers, storage and networking devices.  HP Services also developed new services to help data center managers successfully plan and execute their data center transformation projects.

So Why Now?

Data center transformation is top of mind for businesses and governments alike.  Recently, the CIO for the U.S. government unveiled plans to consolidate 40% of their data centers (roughly 2,000) over the next 4 years – and hope to save billions of dollars.  Industry surveys indicate, that the average data center is twenty years old1 and is extremely power hungry – with the average data center consuming approximately $4M U.S. dollars in energy per year2.  Newer data center designs employ new automated, private cloud technologies and are more energy efficient and highly virtualized.  This “green” movement trend will only continue in 2012, as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is planning on adopting power consumption standards for data centers similar to what the European Union has done3.  The standards will allow CIOs and environmental teams to benchmark data center energy efficiency4

What does HP Software and Services Offer?

HP is introducing enhancements to its leading Discovery and Dependency Mapping Advanced Edition (DDMA) and Universal Configuration Management Database (CMDB) solutions which will help users save time, money and remove risk.  In addition we are also introducing a new Discovery and Dependency Mapping (DDM) Service for Data Center Transformation that helps clients accelerate DCT initiatives with process and automation improvements, allowing organizations to reduce risk, increase speed and protect investments.

“It’s not the 80% of the known data center assets that keep managers up at night but rather the unknown.”

The HP Discovery & Dependency Mapping Advanced product is used in the critical first step in data center transformation – as it discovers current data center assets.  The unknown servers and applications will have dependencies on other applications in the data center, that’s the sticky nature of integrated applications that enterprises have built over time.  That’s why automated dependency discovery has proven to be the most effective discovery tool for successful data center transformations.

New product features include, but are not limited to:

  • New discovery capabilities for AS/400 helps clients discover legacy servers faster.
  • New discovery capabilities for Microsoft Exchange environments helps clients discover important collaboration application.
  • New discovery capabilities for NetApp Filers helps clients extend their discovery to an important storage technology.

HP Universal Configuration Management Data Base (UCMDB) is then used to understand & visually see what exists in the data center and the associated dependencies.  Data center managers then use the UCMDB to plan their data center moves, consolidations or acquisitions.  There are strong audit capabilities that HP recently introduced to ensure the transformation goes as planned.

New product features include, but are not limited to:

  • New topology compliance capability allows clients to easily audit their current state versus what they planned at the start of a project.
  • Extended UCMDB data model to create and edit “Move Groups” for data center transformation projects (reference attachment for an example of "Move Groups").
  • New ability to match physical configuration items with logical configuration items, like a Business Service or Business Unit, allowing clients to extend their model.

Last, but certainly not least, the new HP Discovery & Dependency Mapping (DDM) Service for Data Center Transformation helps organizations accelerate data center transformation initiatives with enhanced process and automation improvements.

What do our clients have to say about this new solution?

Below are just some of the results HP clients have realized:

  • Moved nearly 400 servers and 280 applications in less than 25% of the scheduled time window using HP Discovery and Dependency Mapping (HP DDMA) software.
  • With HP software we moved our data center on schedule and no downtime.”
  • We reduced data center costs by more than $10M by using HP DDMA to discover our servers…
  • Customer observed a saving of 46% in labor cost with automated discovery by HP DDMA.”

Hey Jimmy, that is a great blog.  Those articles are sure to help us get the word out about our Data Center Transformation accelerator.   If you're currently experiencing - or suffering - from a data center transformation initiative, we can help.  Being buried under a reporting tsunami?  Don't know how to go talk to a hundred application owners and do something with what they tell you?  Do you have a risk-avoidant strategy for creating your move groups?  Do you think you can successfully transform your data center without a thorough understanding of the dependencies between and amongst your applications and business services?  If you answered yes or no to any of these questions, seriously, I'd love to talk to you.  Thanks again Jimmy for a great set of interviews and articles.
