Impressions from an ITSM Customer Forum in Milan

Last week HP hosted an ITSM customer event in Milan, Italy. This was a great opportunity for me to meet customers, HP partners and HP colleagues without the need for weeks of traveling across Europe, Middle-East and Africa. Even a few colleagues from across the ocean joined the event, and we ended up having two days fully packed with knowledge and best practicing sharing, case studies, discussions and networking.

Customers came from a variety of industries, including financial services, software, energy, and telecommunications. One highlight for me was beyond doubt the customer studies presented by customers and partners:

  • A HP Service Manager implementation to replace an existing customized service desk installation in a fairly short amount of time.
  •  ITIL configuration management as a fundamental approach to a broad cross-organizational integrated service management solution.
  • A consolidation of multiple service desks to support a central IT organization.
  • Implementation of a software license and asset management solution for a global software company leading to significant annual license savings.
  • The implementation of knowledge management to deal with the increasing complexity of the IT environment.

By the way, integrations and the CMDB (configuration management), or creating a shared service context - this how I often refer to it - play a vital role in all of the case studies I saw. This enables to talk services between different departments, processes and people.

I almost forgot to mention … the weather in Milan was really excellent, the food outstanding and some of us took the opportunity to go to the champions league game FC Internazionale Milano vs. Tottenham Hotspur FC (4:3). I just walked through the crowd of fans on Piazza Duomo who met there for a beer and public viewing I guess. This gave me at least an impression of the atmosphere in the stadium, before I joint a couple of colleagues in a restaurant nearby for watching the match on TV, and for having some really good pasta and wine.
