How much is that service in the window?


I recently attended an EMA webinar titled: Service-Centric Asset Management in the Age of Cloud Computing


I found it very interesting, especially with regard to shopping for IT goods and services.  Like anyone looking for value in today's economy, I want to make the right choice and receive the best return on my investment.  When selecting cloud based service offerings, including: Infrastructure and Software as Services (IaaS and SaaS), I consider these to be "Service Assets".  Like other traditional IT assets, I think about how much it will cost to bring these capital investments into my organization, and how much it will cost to keep them operational and service-ready to my internal customers on a day-to-day or month-to-month basis.


If I were thinking of my my own IT budget, and the other IT assets I'm accountable for; I would need to consider these service assets to as well, and balance the cost to deploy both the physical IT infrastructure and cloud based services to my internal customers.  Therefore, knowing I can track the cost of these contracted services from my 3rd party vendors is critically important - because one day, I may decide to recover these costs from my internal customers, the same way I might distribute the cost of IT equipment - from charging the cost of desktops to a line manager to to charging the business units for utilizing network storage space.  But that's a story for another day...


By combining service, asset and configuration management disciplines, I can realize the benefits of delivering cloud computing as a valued asset to my internal customers, while also tracking the cost of contracting those services from the 3rd party vendors providing them to me.  Now that I understand the cost to deliver these service to my internal customers, and who the internal customers are consuming them; it's up to me to decide when to propose recovering the cost of delivering those services.  I may not achieve a net-zero balance sheet; but it will definitely help improve the bottom line and demonstrate my ability to affect the IT budget for next year!
