HP DDMA helps customers in all phases - assess, modernize and manage - of application transformation

HP today announced Application Transformation Solution offerings designed to help enterprises drive innovation by delivering application flexibility and speed.


HP has several years of experience helping large enterprises in multiple industry verticals, to rationalize, modernize, and manage their application portfolio. Our best practice approach for application transformation comprises of three phases:

Assess the application portfolio, discovering what applications are deployed, analyzing their contribution and their cost, and deciding their disposition strategy
Modernize the portfolio by keeping the applications that are working to perform critical business functions, modernizing under-performing but necessary applications, and retiring applications that are no longer needed
Manage the application portfolio to business SLAs, ensuring the integrity and continuity of application operations.


An initiative such as application transformation requires the use of technology both to simplify and to automate the tasks at hand; HP Discovery and Dependency Mapping Advanced Edition (DDMA) software is one such product that assists enterprises through their application transformation journey.


A new solution brief discusses how HP DDMA software is uniquely positioned to help customers in all three (assess, modernize and manage) phases of application transformation.


HP DDMA software automatically and periodically discovers IT applications and infrastructure elements to generates a topological map of dependencies between IT elements, applications, and business services. It offers broad and deep visibility into the complete IT environment that includes application components, middleware, operating systems, system hardware, and virtualization environments, including the key hypervisors such as VMware, Hyper-V, and Citrix XenServer.

HP DDMA creates this map in a non-intrusive agent-less manner that makes it easy for enterprise IT departments to support. The discovery starts with a few known elements in the IT environment, for example a few IP addresses. Armed with knowledge about these elements, the software seeks out more information about adjoining elements connected to them. Thus, it fans out farther and farther until it creates a complete picture of the environment you target. The end result is a “Google Map” of the data center with various elements from application components to infrastructure elements represented in it—it does this in an automated manner with little human intervention. Thereby creating a factual picture of the enterprise’s IT environment.


The first step in assessing an enterprise portfolio is to know what you have.Through automation HP DDMA can cut the time required to build a comprehensive view of your portfolio from months to weeks or days, depending on the overall portfolio size.


Furthermore, complex portfolios have multiple interrelationships among applications. The topographical map of the interrelationships captured by HP DDMA demonstrates this complexity of the portfolio visually .


With a comprehensive application portfolio, financial planners, and analysts can append additional  information such as the total cost of ownership of the application, its contribution to the business so that enterprises can make better decisions on whether to keep the application, change it, or retire it. These actions and decisions are typically taken with an application portfolio management product such as HP Application Portfolio Management.


Once you assess the application portfolio, the work of restructuring or modernizing of the portfolio begins. In this phase, enterprises do the actual work of keeping what they need, modernizing or changing some applications and retiring others.

Based on the application dependency maps generated by DDMA during the “assess” phase, it is possible to view the application to be retired or updated in the context of all other applications and infrastructure that surrounds it. 


Ensuring consistency between development, test and production environment and retirement of applications is equally important in this phase. Aided by the visibility provided by HP DDMA into application portfolio, the configuration management system compares application configurations between development, test and production environment and ensures consistency.


Getting the complexity of the application ecosystem under control is a major accomplishment, but it is
equally important to make sure it remains under control. With the deep configuration discovery and the ability to dynamically map dependencies offered by HP DDMA, customers can anticipate the impact of change on business services and can make educated decisions about what changes will be made, when, and in what order.
