I recently purchased a Pavillion a1430n Refurb. Works good except for dvd drive which can read/play/burn CD's, but is having problems with dvd's. It can burn dvd's (I already burned my recovery dvd's), but can not read commercial dvd's. I've already tried HP tech support who thus far have been unable to find a fix. Any ideas?

Hi Bernie,
Your TSST TS-H552L is also known as SH-W162L per Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology.
ref:
http://www.samsung-odd.com/eng/Products/Spec/spec. asp?functionvalue=view&parent_idx=4133&level_idx=4 ...
the firmware for this model is:
http://www.samsung-odd.com/eng/Firmware/FWDownload /FWDownload.asp?FunctionValue=view&no=415&SearchWo ...
I would suggest reloading the firmware and if it still does not work, return it to place of purchase. DVD writers are not expensive now days.

I went to KOREA (via internet) to get that firmware update. :)
Are you having problems watching DVD movies or just viewing data on a DVD?
Movies require codecs. XP supplies most of these but you normally have to upgrade the media player to get them.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/down load/AllDownloads.aspx?displang=en&qstechnology=
If its a data DVD and it was burned on another unit, the sesion may not have been closed.
DVD-R requires this but DVD+R does not.
before getting too deep into this, exactly what tpye of DVD are you trying to read?

The problem was specific to store-purchased movie dvds, although I just tried to read the recovery dvd I burned on this same drive and it doesn't read that either.
I just reinstalled Windows Media Player and I'm afraid it didn't make any difference.
I think it's time to abort this mission and simply return the box to the sore and request a new drive.
But thanks for the great effort anyway... how do I reward with hp points?

points are simple.....
Points?
Points are a way to say thank you to the person that has helped you solve your problem.
Only the question author can assign points to a given response. If you submit a question or new topic and another member replies to it, you will see a dropdown menu of points next to the reply (you must be logged in to see the menu). Select the point value and then click the "submit points" button. Note that you can rate multiple replies and submit them at one time. This is helpfull if you wish to give more than 10 points to any one individual.
