HP Pavilion 8580c P2B-VT BIOS Upgrade

I've just purchased a new NVIDIA GeFORCE MX 4000 AGP 128 MB DDR video card. I had no problems in the past with video cards of course they were all PCI. evrything is fine untill I try and play a game evrything freezes up and I have to restart. I heard that a BIOS upgrade would do the trick. Problem is I dont know where to get it...any help would be apreciated :)

Re: HP Pavilion 8580c P2B-VT BIOS Upgrade

Hi there Kevin,

BIOS update for Pavilion 8580c is here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?dlc=en&lc=en&os=54&product=61550〈=en&cc=us&softwareitem=pv466en

In addition to the BIOS update, you may also like to install the updated drivers for the Geforce MX 4000 graphics card. Also, check to see if the Geforce video card is compatible with the preinstalled power supply. For more information on troubleshooting game related issues, see here:

Re: HP Pavilion 8580c P2B-VT BIOS Upgrade

Hi Kevin
The bios update should as you seem to know to be used with caution. The bios listed is dated 9-1-2000,Version 1.07.When you enter bios setup via the F1 key at boot you should be able to read your bios date.A good utilty for reading this and lots of other info on your system is the free Belarc Advisor http://www.belarc.com

Sometimes just removing the Nvidia drivers from Add/Remove Programs and installing latest from Nvidia site helps.

I would look at compatibility of card with your mobo.In upgrading these older Pavilions,I always look to our guys with vast video card experience, such as John Y,Steven H and of course there are others. The cards I have used at their suggestions are Nvidia mx200 or mx400,64mb.Sure there are others but these are the ones I've used with success.

Re: HP Pavilion 8580c P2B-VT BIOS Upgrade

Ok in the readme file it says:(1). Open My Computer
(2). Locate the 3 1/2 Floppy (A:) drive.
(3). Using the "Right" mouse button, click once.
(4). Using the "Left" mouse button, select FORMAT.
(5). Select "Copy System Files Only" and press START.
(6). Run this patch program to unzip the update onto this floppy

Im running XP 98se was originally installed when I purchased the comp. "copy system files only' there is no option when formating the floppy, just "create a MS-DOS startup disk" is that the same? and when I did that and then copied the bios updaate files to the floppy I got a message...a autoexec.bat allready exists do you want to replace it?

Re: HP Pavilion 8580c P2B-VT BIOS Upgrade

As far as the power supply as a possible issue as I stated in my first post the card I had instaled was also a NVidia g-force 4000 only it was a PCI and it required a 300W system power supply mine says output: 160W max input: 240V it ran flawlessly...the only diference I see betwen the two cars is one is a AGP and the other is a PCI the AGP requires 250W and the PCI required 300W

Re: HP Pavilion 8580c P2B-VT BIOS Upgrade

The option Create an MS-dos is correct in Win98.Have you run the Belarc Advisor as a precaution first?
Is the mx4000 backward compatible with the agp 2x of your mobo? Doesn't hurt to check. Also, look in bios setup for a setting about pci/agp video, perhaps. Was the pci card also 128mb?
I don't believe the power supply is the issue.

Nvidia,latest drivers and instructions.

Driver Installation Hints

"Download Accelerator" utilities should be disabled when downloading any drivers.

Do not run virus protection software in the background while installing the drivers. This prevents the driver from configuring itself properly.

Before installing new drivers make sure you uninstall all NVIDIA display drivers from the Windows Control Panel. Browse to the Start Menu > Windows Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and search for "NVIDIA Windows Display Drivers" or "NVIDIA Display Drivers" and select remove.

Re: HP Pavilion 8580c P2B-VT BIOS Upgrade

Well,it appears from Belarc that your bios is older than the one posted.I just always hesitate to tell anyone, especially without knowing their level of expertise,to update their bios.More than one doorstop seen created here :-)
As for the numbers listed in readme, sometimes no way to see these without removing mobo. For some reason, these can be located in some cases on Bottom of mobo.I know, but I guess HP never expected the level of upgrading/investigative powers of home users.
Good luck with the card!

Re: HP Pavilion 8580c P2B-VT BIOS Upgrade

Hi Kevin
Actually I had other things to do so was not still mointoring this post.
I believe the error you are seeing just means you have to remove some files from the floppy. Can't remember, will have to look into it,but seems that after you create the ms-dos floppy, you must remove all but IO.sys, and two others...uhh,drawing a blank.I'll check and be back.
Anyone else, feel free to jump in.

Re: HP Pavilion 8580c P2B-VT BIOS Upgrade

Ok,I think you need to delete autoexec.bat and confg.sys from the floppy to make it work.Hafta to say it has been a couple or more years since I ran Win98,using XP since it came out and much is different.

Re: HP Pavilion 8580c P2B-VT BIOS Upgrade

Instructions per HP
Loading the BIOS update

Leave the floppy disc in the PC; close all open windows, and restart the PC.

Press Y at the prompt or type PFLASH2 at the a:\ prompt to proceed with the installation.

When a message box appears indicating the Flash Memory has been successfully programmed, remove the disk from the A: drive, and press any key to restart the computer.

During the startup process, the following message will be displayed:

"0251: System CMOS checksum bad - Default configuration used

Press F1 to Setup, F2 to Resume."

Cross fingers again!

Press F1 to enter SETUP.

Press F5 to reset BIOS defaults, then press ENTER.

Press F10 to exit SETUP and save changes.

Press ENTER to confirm the save.

The PC will restart and the BIOS update is complete

Re: HP Pavilion 8580c P2B-VT BIOS Upgrade

Does your floppy have HIMEM.SYS on it?If so delete it.
Or,try making a new floppy by formatting the one you're using.Open a command prompt window and type format a: /s
Then run the bios proggie again to create the bios update, boot with the floppy again, and type phlash at the A prompt.

Hope that video card works after all this!:-)

Make sure nothing is connected to the Serial ports when attempting to Flash the system BIOS.

Re: HP Pavilion 8580c P2B-VT BIOS Upgrade

Exactly the reason I said I don't recommend it not knowing a user's level of expertise. But if you insist on continuing to try,I can only suggest at this point to go here and download Driver Free Disk for Bios Flashing.

http://www.bootdisk.com/

And,yes,I have had the same error message, several years ago and long forgotten, along with Win98.You might also do a Google search on the error you are receiving. There is an abundance of info to be found and I don't have time to research this for you.

Re: HP Pavilion 8580c P2B-VT BIOS Upgrade

By the way...just to add some assistance, since that's what we're here for...I believe this card won't work in this computer. A GF4 PCI card should work, but I suspect you don't have the AGP 2.0 (4x) slot required for the GF4 AGP card.
