iPAQ hw6965 USB modem with GSM only (noGPRS) send SMS via hyper terminal

I have an HP iPAQ hw6965 with WM 5.0 I have a GSM connection to send receive SMS and mobile calls. All this works fine.

I want to be able to send SMS from a software program that I am writing.

For testing I have searched the net and found that this can be achieved by the AT+ commands. So I have a WinXP SP3, hyperterminal, iPAQ connected via the USB cradle, the usb modem in the mobile->start->program->modemLink is Active. I cannot change the "Access Point Name". I can only select it and it has only one option which seems to be an GPRS APN.

COM20 is what the USB modem is connected on so I use the com20 in Hyperterminal to connect to the mobile.

AT command seems to work as it returns OK ATI 1 to 5 also seem to work.

But non of the SMS releated commands work always return an ERROR or hang.

I have used a NOKIA 6630 in the similar way and I could send an SMS with AT+CMGS="+....

Any pointers or help to use the HP iPAQ to send/recv SMS from hyper terminal is appreciated.
