Newbie needs help with ipaq 5450

Hello All,

I have just got my first pda and very confused, so please be gentle lol.

Firstly I want to know what version my ipaq software is and find out if there is any updates for it, but I can't find out on the device.

Also I am having a problem with my wifi as the wifi only works when it's in it's cradle and wanted to know if I'm doing something wrong?

Also, does anyone know how to close programs on the 5450 as it seems they are still open even though I have closed them at the top-right of the screen.

Thanks All for your help,
Alan.

Re: Newbie needs help with ipaq 5450

Your Pocket PC is running Windows Mobile 2003 and that is not upgradeable

How's the battery doing when the iPAQ is out of the cradle? Is it holding enough charge?

To close programs you need to install a task manager. Something like MagicButton (which also includes a convenient battery meter)

Re: Newbie needs help with ipaq 5450

Thanks Lutz for your help, I've been playing around with the iPAQ and now found how to use it a bit better, and yes the battery is holding charge fine, I played Solitaire for ages and the battery % didn't go down at all and I also had bluetooth on at the same time.

I got MagicButton and installed it but doesn't seem to work, the icon for it looked like a little DOS box and when I clicked it it came up an error message.

I was also told by a friend that my iPAQ is running Windows CE 3.0 so is that the same as Windows 2003?

Thanks for all your help.

Re: Newbie needs help with ipaq 5450

Uh-Oh. Windows CE 3.0 is the underlying OS for Pocket PC 2002 (not WM2003 as I said initially) I _think_ there should be an upgrade to 2003 available (for example on eBay) which you may want to consider.

Re: Newbie needs help with ipaq 5450

I have brought the upgrade and downloaded the updates from HP so Im all ready, but when I start the update it search's for my device and says it can't find it.
So I read the Readme txt that came with the upgrade and it doesn't say anything about it being compatible with Vista, so does anyone know if I can install the upgrade in Vista or does it not make a difference and I have another problem.

Thanks.

Re: Newbie needs help with ipaq 5450

Vista will only work with 2003 and later OS.
You must do the upgrade through an XP computer.

So when you get your ipaq ugraded, here you can read about how to sync it with your Vista:

Re: Newbie needs help with ipaq 5450

Thanks for that link kaj, it was a great help.
The only problem I have now is still WiFi and I have installed all the updates for my device but it still doesn't seem to want to work??

But I will do some Google search's to see if I can find a guide how to do it, but at least I can get the internet to work while it's in the cradle.

Re: Newbie needs help with ipaq 5450

I have tried using guides I have found on the internet to get wifi working but still no luck.

So does anyone know of some software I can get to check my wifi is working on my iPAQ? As it could just be faulty wifi.
Also should the wifi icon appear at the bottom of the screen like it does with WM2002 as its not.

Thanks all for your help, Im very greatfull :)

Re: Newbie needs help with ipaq 5450

Try removing the battery for 10 seconds - this resets the wireless hardware.

Re: Newbie needs help with ipaq 5450

I removed the battery for 10sec and it didnt help, when I took the battery off I also noticed another slot under where the battery goes and does anyone know what it's for? I guess its for another type of memory card but haven't seen a memory card that size n shape before & I looked in the PDF manual and can't find anything about it???

Also I have just downloaded and installed PocketWiNc and when I start the app (not in the docking station) it comes up with the following:-

Unable to locate adapter. This application will be closed.

So now I am getting worried, I take it there is a big problem and that the WiFi is not working at all.

Re: Newbie needs help with ipaq 5450

You could try the Welcome cure:

with File Explorer, navigate to \My Device\Windows, scroll most of the way down, find the file Welcome, and tap it to run it. It'll seem to be doing a hard reset, but you won't lose any data.

Re: Newbie needs help with ipaq 5450

Sorry but no difference, I also tried a soft rest and still nothing. I think I am going to have to put up with no wifi :(
At least everything else works fine (touch wood)

Thanks for your help.

Re: Newbie needs help with ipaq 5450

It is possible to change the wifi module. It is a separate board. I think the price for the board is 15 - 20 USD.

Re: Newbie needs help with ipaq 5450

I would try a hard reset first.

Make a backup first.

press and hold lower left and lower right buttons whilst pressing reset button on bottom with stylus.

Hold these three buttons for at least 4 seconds until display fades

then you need to reactivate battery -
remove and reinstall battery
connect to AC power
press reset button on bottom with stylus

Then see if the WiFi works - either way, then restore from your backup.

Re: Newbie needs help with ipaq 5450

you will lose all data which is why I suggested the backup first.

Re: Newbie needs help with ipaq 5450

I have MS Office Pro so I didn't have the sync error, but you can turn email sync off via the Windows Mobile Device Centre by going to Mobile Device Settings -> Change content sync settings and then UNTICK the E-Mail box.
Otherwise its a matter of getting Outlook.
Hope this helps Peter.

Re: Newbie needs help with ipaq 5450

You can get outlook from: http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/outlook/default.aspx

and once you have set it up everything should be working OK.
