Many of the issues being discussed during the 2014 HP Government Summit are at the heart of the Obama Administration and congressional efforts to reform how the federal government buys and manages IT. These include cloud computing, portfolio management, application performance testing and software assurance.  Are you sure you are compliant? The Obama Administration’s Fiscal Year 2015 IT Budget is expected to address IT reform head on, with a number of initiatives aimed at changing the way the government buys IT.  The troubled rollout of the Affordable Care Act web site has generated a number of lessons learned that will likely be referenced in the 2015 budget and will be discussed during the  2014 Government Summit.  These lessons include:

  • The need for more robust portfolio management
  • strengthened demand management
  • High-performance analytics needed for better project execution

Within the Congress, the second version of the Federal Information Technology Acquisition Reform Act (FITARA) of 2014 just cleared the House of Representatives and is pending Senate consideration.  Many of FITARA’s thrusts will be discussed during HP’s 2014 Government Summit, including:

  • Data center optimization
  • Inventorying IT assets with a particular focus on software licenses
  • Shared IT service delivery models

Strengthening the software assurance of federal IT applications is a priority for both the Obama Administration and Congress.  Most recently, the Department of Defense updated an Application Security Technical Implementation Guide to mandate automated code scanning across the entire Department of Defense software development ecosystem. This follows the explicit language in the National Defense Authorization Act of 2013 requiring automated scanning and remediation of known software vulnerabilities.

After almost 20 years, federal IT reform is back on the front burner.  When you attend the HP Government Summit on April 2, you can learn how to help your agency be smarter in how it buys and manages its IT infrastructure.  You will learn what it takes to be compliant and how to achieve full compliance for your organization
