Content Delivery Networks (CDN)

Today’s worldwide online applications are expected to provide good and fast performance to customers around the globe.

Consider web based applications such as the British Broadcasting Corporation website ( ), the China Central Television website (, or the Victoria’s Secret website ( ). Such applications provide rich content to their users, which may include:

-       Highly detailed photos

-       Sound recording

-       Movies and live streaming

The applications must provide content continuously (24/7) and simultaneously to users around the world (for example to users in Australia, Canada, Spain, Singapore, and Kenya), providing good, fast performance.

Even though application servers may be located far away (for the above applications - China, England and America), and even though these applications need to provide large,  heavy, rich, and detailed content for their global customers, the geographical distance and long transportation time along the global network cannot be excuses for poor performance.




So how do these applications provide large, heavy, rich, and detailed content to their customers with good, fast performance? The answer is simple – by using local cache.

Local cache, which is close to the customer both geographically and in network terms, can provide large, heavy, rich, and detailed content for application users with good, fast performance.




In the spirit of the Cloud Computing era, we want to consume these local cache servers as Cloud Computing services. This is what Content Delivery Network (CDN) is all about.




CDN has become a de facto standard for global applications and it is among the most popular Cloud services.  In the years to come we are likely to see:

  • More applications that use CDN
  • The evolution of the CDN service
  • CDN implementation for mobile networks (some which can already be seen today)

New and more sophisticated financial pricing modules for CDN Cloud services
