Smart meter monitoring using HP ArcSight

The data generated by and captured from smart meters brings us to an entirely new frontier of understanding related to utility production and consumption.”

– Jeremy Kelley, Senior Data Solutions Architect

Smart meters are installed in just about every home in America.  They provide for the automation of usage tracking of electrical energy, natural gas or water. This ability  reduces costs for utility companies and consumers.  Unfortunately, these devices also open the door for malfunction and fraud.

An Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) enables two-way communication with the smart meter and allows commands such as “disconnect-reconnect or turn off to be sent to the device.,”  This communication is often unencrypted and transmits on public communication systems such as Wi-Fi, satellite or related networks.

Monitoring these devices is the first line of defense for detecting malicious behavior

HP has developed and implemented a smart meter monitoring solution to ensure the availability and accuracy of the smart grid data. The solution utilizes HP ArcSight ESM, HP ArcSight Logger, and HP ArcSight Connector Appliances.

One implementation includes monitoring over 5.5 million smart meters and 10,000 cell relays communicating over the cellular network.
