Another day, another Botnet. Are you protected from BrutPOS?

BrutPOS is the latest botnet to challenge your network security in the ever-evolving threat landscape. In this case, POS truly does stand for Point-of-Sale, and not the (arguably) more appropriate acronym that comes to mind. This malware is active in the wild and targeting merchants and retailers.

Botnet-illustration.jpgBrutPOS is a trojan that targets the Windows operating system and is used to bruteforce the Remote Desktop Protocol (rdp) of POS servers with weak or commonly used passwords. Once the malware receives a list of credentials from its command-and-control server, it reports back any successful logins. Once a successful login is detected, the malware phones home to download additional malicious software that auto installs and scans memory in order to extract credit card information.

Unfortunately, cybercriminals have all the time in the world to target victims, but here at HP TippingPoint, we understand that every second matters. The great news is the HP TippingPoint DVLabs security intelligence team has responded quickly, providing customers with targeted protection from this malware’s outbound communication attempts.

On July 15th, filter 16460 will be published in our HP TippingPoint DVLabs weekly Digital Vaccine package. In the interim, customers are encouraged to contact HP TippingPoint support or local Solution Architects to receive a custom filter for immediate deployment.

TippingPoint strives to provide the most timely and relevant coverage in response to the latest attacks. Learn more about the TippingPoint Next-Generation Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) and be sure to join us at HP Protect in D.C. on September 8-11.
