Depending on your version of 6, you may need to complete an upgrade of the database schema to 7.X first, then upgrade the schema again to RM8.

Re: Can we directly upgrade from TRIM 6 to TRIM 8 or should we first upgrade to TRIM7 and then to TR

There is an upgrade path directly from TRIM 6r2, so depending on your version of TRIM 6 you may be able to do this as Jon pointed out.

From the RM8 installation guide:

Upgrading from HP TRIM 6.2
About upgrading from TRIM 6.2
The upgrade does not preserve the TRIM 6.2 user environment, for example, shortcuts or favorites. You may have to recreate them manually after the upgrade.
The upgrade does not preserve the data for global settings. The HP Records Manager administrator should set up a new set of global settings after the upgrade and users should use Get Global to apply the new settings. Global settings functionality is only available after upgrading the servers and should not be used before the server upgrade is complete.
The way peripheral applications are installed has changed significantly and does not always allow for an upgrade from TRIM 6.2 using an .msi file. Therefore, make sure you follow the recommended steps exactly to avoid removing 6.2 data or being unable to fully remove 6.2 peripheral applications.
HP Records Manager peripheral applications should always be the same version and build number as the HP Records Manager main client software.
Upgrade steps from HP TRIM 6.2 to HP Records Manager 8.x
Upgrade HP Records Manager from version 6.2 in the following order:
1 Perform database and dataset maintenance tasks as described in Appendix F below
2 Upgrade HP TRIM and its peripheral applications on all the HP TRIM client computers.
In addition to the main HP TRIM client software, client computers may have different HP TRIM peripheral applications and extensions installed.

If you can get a copy of the installation guide then you can read through this yourself.  We have performed a couple of 6R2 dayabase schema's directly to RM8 and didn't seem to have any issues.

In theory there should be no problem going from 6 to 8.

Go to page 61 of the RM 8 Install guide and it tells you how to perform the upgrade - See attached
