The HP RM document content search now with IDOL has stemming configured as part of the setup, so any document content search gives more results than usually expected.  For example, a document content search on 'federally' gives results of 'federally', 'federated', 'federal', etc.  Previous document content searches with ISYS would only return results with 'federally'.  The more traditional TRIM document content results set can be accomplished using the IDOL query search and " " or '&stemming=true'.   Is this the designed search for HP RM document content searching and IDOL query search should be used to find the 'exact' term?

Hi,

You have asked and answered your own question. ISYS was only returning 'exact' matches and IDOL returns a more internet style of like terms.

As you have suggested, I normally use "" to find exact terms and this is by design for IDOL.

This gives IDOL more flexibility in returning broader results if required by the user. Just a matter of re-training users in the terms used to return the searches that they want.

Re: ATTENTION: TRIM Online Expert Day on March 31-April 1*, 2014!

Also had one of my colleagues flick me this:

1. When text is indexed into IDOL server, stopwords, numbers and alphanumerics are removed from the text and the remaining text is stemmed. Stemming is the process for reducing words to their stem, base or root form (stemming is different for each language). Autonomy provides stemming algorithms that reduce word into this form. This is useful because it allows concepts to be matched regardless of the grammatical use of words. In English, for example, the words "help", "helpful", "helping" and "helped" can all be stripped down to their stem "help" without significant loss of meaning.

Autonomy provides as standard a set of stemming algorithms for the most commonly used languages. Stemming is applied after stopwords have been discarded both at index time (when content is stored in IDOL server) and at query time (query text is stopped and stemmed before it is matched).

2. Don't use wildcards without query text or you could wait a long time ...

Hope that helps

IDOL Exact Match Search configuration

If you want Exact Word Matches to be the default search matching method, you need to do this before indexing:

From the IDOL Essentials Manual:

Set the AdvancedSearch config parameter to true in the config files [Server] section. This allows IDOL server to match any term or phrase that appears in quotation marks in its exact pre-stemmed form when it is queried (enabling AdvancedSearch has no notable effect on IDOLs servers index size).

If you have already indexed content into IDOL Server, it will be necessary to export your existing data, perform the DREINITAL index command, set AdvancedSearch=True in the [Server] section and restart your IDOL Server instance. Once this procedure has taken place all new content indexed into IDOL server will store non-stemmed references o the terms being indexed.

Presumably, after REINITIALisation, you'll need to reingest the backup to recreate the index of existing terms.

Backup:

http://<host>:<port>/DREBACKUP?

Re-initialise:

http://<host>:<port>/DREINITIAL?

Set the config changes and restart the server

Restore the backup:

http://<host>:<port>/DREINITIAL?<path>
