British Sky Broadcasting


high def TV.jpgBritish Sky Broadcasting (Sky) is a UK entertainment and communications company that provides high definition television, home telephony and broadband services.  In order to deliver superior customer experience to its nearly 10 million subscribers, Sky must guarantee that its mission critical systems are working at peak performance through a rigorous program of application quality tests.  Sky wanted to upgrade its application testing processes to eliminate duplication and rework and increase its in-depth diagnostic capabilities. 


Using HP Performance Center, HP Diagnostics, HP TransactionVision and HP SiteScope as a centralized test environment, Sky was able to realize a payback in just 5.3 months after implementation.  IT benefits included:


  • Internet used to enable 24x7 performance testing.
  • New root cause analysis and identification.
  • Test scenario coverage increased six fold.
  • Test throughput increased four fold.
  • The introduction of ‘blended tests’ means that all routes to market can be tested simultaneously.

Last week. I was at a big customer event, HP Discover. The big buzz at the show was all around the multi-year project with another media and entertainment firm with British roots.  The Discover show featured a concert by Paul McCartney but also a huge exhibit showcasing a multi-year project between HP and the world’s best-known songwriter and entertainer.  HP is building a state-of-the-art digital library to house Paul’s media collection of more than one million items, including photos, films, tapes and more. Selecting HP gave Paul McCartney and his media company, MPL Communications, Ltd. access to hardware and software capabilities including information optimization solutions from HP Software.
