High School Interns at HP? Yep, we do that too!

In late Spring I ran into a colleague at HP’s Plano, TX campus.  She asked if I’d be available to work with our incoming interns.  I said, “Sure!  I’d love to!”

Little did I know that the interns she was talking about were a group of nine very impressive high school sophomores, juniors and seniors from the Dallas area.  That’s right… HIGH SCHOOL INTERNS.

This may not be new to all of you, but it was to me.  When I was in high school back in the 80s, I was looking for work waiting tables, fitting 3rd graders with football helmets and picking up debris around construction sites.  Glamorous, I know!

I was intrigued.

It turns out Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings sponsors the program (launched in 2008) to place career-minded high school students into local businesses for real-world experience.  The list of participating businesses this summer was impressive.

During their first week in the building I got to sit down with Juan, Xeph, Jocelyne, James, Sara, Salma, Kelly, Vinit and Diego to get to know them a bit.  I was blown away by their drive, their ability to pick things up quickly and how well rounded they are.  If they are a sample of our next generation of thinkers, we’re in pretty good shape.

I got a chance to mentor a few of them over the summerand learn from them as well!  It was a fantastic experience, and I applaud Mayor Rawlings and his team.  This is an impactful endeavor.

Sadly, their summer has come to an end and they are all back at school now.  But they didn’t leave without a lasting impression, some cubicles in need of a cleaning and a handful of handwritten thank you cards.

I’ve connected with each of them via social media and will be very interested to see how their careers progress.

I’m expecting big things.
