Put Cloud into gear: How IT automation is like your car

gears.jpgThe automobile, which transformed society by largely automating the movement of people, offers a good analogy for how the cloud can automate the delivery of IT services to a point where individual business users can be in the driver’s seat without ever needing to know what’s under the hood.

I strongly suggest that every customer that has a current relationship with a Hypervisor company should immediately enlist a development team to evaluate Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) for use in Dev/Test.

Companies need to evaluate KVM in a Dev/Test environment, in order to save money and be ready for the next, great software audit. Read on to understand why having hypervisor diversity is an important consideration in your cloud management plan.

Building on a foundation of automation

G8658048032008_JPGHighres_96dpi_800x600.png

As I noted in my previous blog post, provisioning IT as a cloud service broker is fundamentally different from traditional IT that offers huge potential. Imagine removing most or all complexity from ordering IT services to the point that business users could do it through a self-service web interface.

One of the key prerequisites for this type of transformation is a mature and comprehensive approach to automation that works with a hybrid of cloud and traditional IT architecture. Read on to learn more.

Improve server delivery by looking past “time to deploy”

automation time.pngUnless you have to deploy thousands of server instances simultaneously in just a few seconds, calculating the difference between cloned images and unattended scripting technologies is answering the wrong question. Here is how you can get some perspective.

Can your e-Commerce website handle one million concurrent users, or even 100 K users? Find out!

If you are anticipating busy online holiday shopping season, you know the stress I am talking about. You know customers are going to be clamoring for your products. You also know that a large amount of your sales are going to come from your website—is it ready?

The key to making sure your web portal has the capacity to endure the pressure of that many users is to run a test scenario. But what is the best way to do this? Keep reading to find out how to properly conduct a load test and check the stability of your site.

Your cloud transformation starts here: How to develop a strategic plan

Clone vs. script OS builds: Why “time to deploy” is not the only deciding factor

Slide2.pngIt’s a long-standing debate in the IT trenches: when automating the deployment of an OS, do you clone (i.e. image build) or perform an unattended scripted install? Images can take a lot less time to deploy than scripting, but I think there are other factors you also need to consider that make it not such a clear-cut decision.

Manage the hybrid cloud with a single, integrated toolset

G6889336082007_JPGHighres_96dpi_800x600.png

I have a question for you. I want you see if the following scenario sounds like your organization.

Let’s say you are an organization in the Americas and you’re purchasing infrastructure from AWS, while using internal cloud for dev-test. Asia is using traditional IT. EMEA is a patchwork of different environments, depending on data compliance in the different regions. Meanwhile you have multiple Lines of Business, each trying to get the jump on their competitors by going to service providers that operate outside IT corporate policies! Is this your nightmare?

The scenario I’ve just described creates a management nightmare for CIOs, and now it is increasingly affecting CMOs too. CMOs are now actively managing their own requirements across traditional IT, as well as private and public clouds.  Read on to understand what it means to manage the hybrid cloud, and how to avoid the pitfalls in your cloud journey.
