New chapter CIO 2020 in HP's "crowd sourced" Enterprise 2020 vision of the future

Are you in the "cloud will get rid of IT operations" camp, or are you more of a "cloud, like all hype from the computing industry, will not fundamentally change the data centre of 2020"?

 

We at HP are "crowd sourcing" a vision of the world in 2020. We have broken the vision into a series of chapters. We are publishing a chapter roughly every month. Once a chapter is published, we encourage anyone and everyone to go to the web site and comment on the chapter. We then use the comments to update the chapter.

 

On August 19th, we published the initial version of the "CIO 2020" chapter - a chapter that puts forward a vision for the IT department of 2020.

 

It may come as a surprise to some that "CIO 2020" talks about more than just cloud. What are your views on …

 

  • SaaS-ing all of your company's non-core applications and business processes (we believe that this will have happened by 2020)
  • Having all dev and test environments sourced from the cloud (we believe that will also have happened by 2020. The question is, "what will PaaS look like in 2020 - will PaaS-es be so powerful and easy to use that they are the default for most applications?")
  • Having a huge increase in the number of "smart things", like cars, washing machines, toothbrushes, bikes, and factories (we believe that this will happen by 2020)
  • Most Enterprises becoming SaaS providers, often providing back-end cloud services for their "smart things" (we believe that this will also happen by 2020 - it is already starting to happen)
  • Supporting the decrease in the number of direct employees in Enterprises and the rise of the "super temp" in order to create Enterprise-led project teams made up of mosaics of different companies (for example, the opening and closing ceremonies for the London 2012 Olympic Games were created by hundreds of companies all working together)
  • Gaining insight from the mass of unstructured data that is "out there" (we believe that this will also happen - it's one of the reasons HP acquired Autonomy)
  • Bring your own device, BYOD, and the demand from the business that browser interfaces are not good enough and that every application must run on iOS (phone and tablet), Android (phone and tablet), laptops (Windows and Mac) and SmartTV (this is, of course, already happening, but we think that it will be the default for most applications by 2020)

Prior to joining HP - Shak was with Cisco managing their Global Unified Compute and Virtualization Practice. Before that Shakeeb was with VMware in various capacities for nearly 6 years managing VMware's customers and strategic partners. Shakeeb spend almost a decade prior to VMware with other enterprise software companies such as Interwoven and Platinum Technology managing enterprise content management and enterprise performance management solutions respectively. Shak started his professional career after completing his Master's in Management from University of California, with PriceWaterHouseCoopers where he managed multiple consulting teams responsible for worldwide delivery of large enterprise solutions.
