How Can Enterprise IT Embrace Public Cloud?

How can Enterprise IT embrace public cloud?

Last week, I blogged about when IT embraces public cloud as a strategic asset, it can drive more business flexibility and tighter business and IT alignment.  Of course, if exploiting public cloud was easy for everyone, there would be no divide between business and IT cloud adoption proven out by multiple industry analysts surveys showing business is bypassing IT and adopting cloud 5 times faster than IT (and no need for this blog).  So, what’s the problem?

What’s the big deal?

The crux of the challenge presented by public cloud can be summed up in one word: management.  Managing how an enterprise uses public cloud services is hard, plain and simple.  It’s not just a big deal, it’s a huge deal.  Let’s sum it up:

1)    You have to find a way to work with private and public cloud resources, and maybe even traditional IT, ideally from a single management environment that enables you to work with private and public cloud resources in the same way.

2)    You need to manage all of your cloud services across their full lifecycle, from initial design, through deployment, and ongoing monitoring and management.

3)      You need to implement clear governance and control over public cloud resource use, with flexible policies that may differ from those you apply within your private cloud

4)      You need to enable and manage a wide range of private, public, and hybrid cloud deployment use cases.

5)      You probably need to be able to manage services across multiple public clouds, from different providers, and that list of providers will grow, shrink, and change over time.

6)      You want to leverage investments you’ve already made in infrastructure and enterprise management technologies.

Right. That’s a tall order.  But of course, it’s a setup: yes, I know how to solve all of these problems.  Actually, it’s HP that knows how.

Embracing public cloud with HP CloudSystem

HP CloudSystem has been built from the ground up with hybrid cloud in mind.  And newly announced CloudSystem bursting capabilities will put hybrid cloud management directly into the hands of IT.  That means you can put ‘problem solved’ checkmarks next to each issue identified above, and then some.  HP has demonstrated earlier this year how to burst to public cloud. HP will also burst from HP CloudSystem to HP Cloud Services.

HP CloudSystem realigns the business with IT and puts IT back in the game.  No longer will the business need to bypass IT to get what they need.  They can have access to private, public and hybrid resources all from the same self service portal.  And more..
