HP Cloud Security Research: What Does the Market Think?

HP Cloud recently completed a global security survey with over 600 respondents on the topic of public cloud (You can read the survey results here):

  • Geography: Americas 69% / EMEA 19% / APAC 12%
  • Organization Size: Enterprise 29% / Medium 27% / Small 44%
  • Tile: C-Level and VP 26% / Director 14% / Manager 21% / Supervisor 5% / Technician 16%

Here are a few of the key findings from the survey:

  • The Cloud Majority – 70% of the respondents say their company is using some form of cloud with cloud penetration jumping to 80% for enterprise-sized organizations (1,000+ employees)
  • Cloud Security Confidence – More than half of those using the public cloud are confident that critical and sensitive data can be secured in the public cloud
  • Security Breaches are a Reality – 16% of those companies in the cloud reported at least one public cloud breach in the past 12 months
  • Cloud Security Benefit Alignment – There is significant alignment between the cloud security benefits experienced by those using the public cloud and the benefits expected by those not yet in the public cloud
  • Divergent Views on Cloud Security Evaluation Criteria – Those who are in cloud and those who are not yet in the cloud hold wildly divergent opinions on the importance of specific cloud security evaluation criteria
  • Vendors Lead as Trusted Sources for Security Advice and Best Practices – Cloud and security technology vendors predominate as trusted advisors for public cloud security. However, enterprises are more likely to also turn to non-vendor organizations for trusted advice and best practices on public cloud security

There were also a few unexpected surprises from the survey:

  • Companies who report they are NOT officially using the public cloud admit to still having public cloud usage among their employees
    • Rogue cloud usage is a common problem. 40% of those that officially said they do not use public cloud then answer questions that show they ARE in the cloud
  • Both companies “in the cloud” and “not in the cloud” report issues with employees putting corporate data at risk in public cloud
    • 39% have had problems with employees putting their data in the public cloud without approval
    • 26% have had problems with employees putting their applications in the public cloud without approval

HP Cloud is making the complete survey results available on our  site for customers and technologists looking for the detailed results.
