Building and automating the private cloud: 5 prerequisites for success

Private clouds have a lot to offer IT departments looking to reorient themselves from delivering technology to delivering services that support overall business goals. Moving to a private cloud is a major step in this direction. In this post, I’d like to review what you should consider as the absolute necessary prerequisites to build an effective private cloud for your organization.


  • Prerequisite #1: Standardization

Standardization is critical to building a private cloud because it allows for the sharing of services. And isn’t that the point of cloud computing? Standardization means developing a set of long-term policies and procedures, perhaps using ITILv3 or another framework as a starting point and then building on with additional best practices as needs dictate. The goal is consistency across the applications lifecycle, from development and deployment to operations, maintenance and retirement. Why is standardization so important? The benefits are increased efficiency and productivity of both IT and business users and reduced costs and complexity. But the biggest advantage is that standardization sets the foundation for automation and a consistent approach to managing business services.


  • Prerequisite #2: Consolidated system management

The private cloud is made possible in a large part due to virtualization technology. But the mix of virtualization technology and traditional physical technology makes management more of a challenge. That’s why to manage a private cloud, you need to approach the issue of provisioning in an end-to-end manner that accounts for the management of both virtual and physical assets. You need a centralized, integrated automated toolset for managing physical, virtual and cloud environments uniformly.



  • Prerequisite #3: Service level management

Just because you are deploying in the cloud, doesn’t mean that the fundamentals of service management go away. Private cloud means your IT must take a holistic approach to monitoring and managing resources where IT system can monitor conditions and response automatically based on predefined parameters. That way you can reap one of the biggest benefits of a private cloud—the ability to flex up or down to meet business service demand in real time. Automated resource management capabilities are a must in private cloud management.



  • Prerequisite #4: Cloud application lifecycle

While running applications in a Web-based environment is not new to IT, cloud computing requires even more rigorous development practices. Because the cloud makes everything faster, automated tools for application development and testing play an even bigger role for successful private cloud implementations. Without automation, there’s simply no way to keep up with the cloud.


  • Prerequisite #5: Security, compliance, change, and configuration

With a private cloud, IT organizations must have consistent, enterprise-wide processes for key IT management tasks such as security, compliance, change and configuration. This is why automation of these processes in a consistent manner is a must. HP believes if you implement your private cloud with each prerequisite in place, you can deliver business applications at a lower coast and drive productivity to fully realize the benefits of the private cloud.
