#AutonomyReborn – Boomerangs come back, and so has Autonomy



There’s a rebirth taking place at HP Autonomy that has been quietly gaining momentum. With SVP and General Manager Robert Youngjohns  at the helm we are transforming the Autonomy culture in every way: the way we do business, how we engage with customers, and how we treat and communicate with employees.


Employees are vital to this transformation. In fact, the re-making of Autonomy has become so real, we have a term for it internally: Autonomy Reborn. This has become a rallying cry for us in the face of big odds and a fair share of doubters, we’ve quietly gone about our work of remaking the organization. #AutonomyReborn signs have popped up in the offices worldwide, and you’ll often see folks signing off their emails with the slogan.


So that is why it is especially gratifying to see a new report from 451 Research, which takes an honest, in-depth look at what is really happening at the new Autonomy. Written by analyst David Horrigan, the report picks up on a key theme that personifies AutonomyReborn—the growing number of “boomerang employees.”


Boomerangs are employees who left the company during the old era, and upon hearing of the rejuvenation and rebirth taking place at the new HP Autonomy, have since returned. To date over three dozen such employees have returned, across all lines of business and all functions. People like Sunil Menon and Madhukar Kumar, longtime Interwoven leaders who are driving the next generation of our Marketing Optimization offerings. And Jeff Friedman and Joe Garber, who have returned to extend our lead in the highly strategic eDiscovery and Information Governance markets. 




Horrigan extends the “boomerang” theme to represent the turnaround taking place at HP Autonomy:


“However, boomerangs come back, and so has Autonomy. In 2013, the division added about

150 new customers, and in our discussions with some of the division's longtime customers, they give the new HP Autonomy high marks, with some sounding as though they could supply quotes for the dust jacket of David Packard's book, The HP Way. In addition to happy customers, the division had 15 new products last year. Employee headcount and morale are up, as evidenced by the dozens of returning employees and a dramatically lowered employee attrition rate. As the division adds new products and integrates existing ones, many of its customers and employees say the new HP Autonomy seems to have found its way.”


Of course, the most important indicator of the HP Autonomy turnaround is the feedback from customers. By our internal measures, customer satisfaction scores have gone up dramatically. Horrigan and the team at 451 Research are seeing the same thing:


“Customers are happier. The evidence is anecdotal, but we have not heard any serious criticisms of the new HP Autonomy's customer service. We used to hear many about the old Autonomy.”
