iTunes proved that in order to win music fans you need a pretty simple formula: offer one place to find and download all the music they want, and make the process easy, intuitive and available on demand. That formula catapulted Apple, enabling it to take over the distribution of music in a few short years, which made traditional music retailers virtually irrelevant.


In many ways, IT organizations could find themselves in a similar predicament. If public cloud service providers continue to win over IT’s business customers by making IT services as easy to order as a song on iTunes, IT will become irrelevant. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Your IT maturity checklist: How mature are you?

As an expert in IT transformation a lot of what I do for customers is go in and tell them their baby is ugly.


Let me explain. To get to the new, cool things many of my colleagues have been talking about on this blog, like consumption-based software services and out-of-the-box adoption, you need to have a certain level of maturity in your organisation. But many organisations simply aren’t ready yet—and they don’t realise it. The sad truth is, many are simply not mature enough to be able to internalise and deliver on the dream that enticed them initially.


Maturity matters. Here's a checklist to find out how mature you are.

IT value chain: The request to fulfill value stream

R to F.pngThe request to fulfill value stream focuses on how well IT manages its overarching request and fulfillment activities—the so-called operational demand. Simply put, operational demand orchestrates of the outputs of strategic demand, business-delivered strategic demand, or existing operational capabilities/assets. As such, this value stream focuses on the consuming, the buying, or the brokering of IT or business services. The goal for this value stream is to achieve self-service IT that is truly elastic in its response to demand.

IT service management needs the ability to measure its benefits

Better Myles.jpgLast summer, I met with a CIO from a Global 50 company. His team was in the decision-making process for the purchase of a new service management tool. When we discussed IT performance management, this CIO said that no one else had talked to him about it. All the vendors on the short list had only mentioned the ROI for buying the tool.  He went onto say that having a performance management system with a service management tool means that he will get the business transformation and ROI that were his goals in purchasing the new tool in the first place.
